Cool Edit Pro / Realtek Conflict

I had a computer (Windows XP) with Realtek audio and Cool Edit Pro 2.0. Everytime I recorded my playback was full of hiss and scratch. It sucked.

When I got a new computer (Windows Vista) it didn't have Realtek and all my recordings using CEP 2.0 were clear as a bell.

Now I have another computer (Windows Vista). It has Realtek. :( I am right back where I started.

If I reduce all the recording volume to get rid of the hiss the playback is way too low for good quality. Amplifying it only brings back the hiss and worse.

No matter what I try, the playback sounds like having a friend on the phone and someone picks up on the other line. Loud Air. I'm stumped.

Has anyone had this problem/know about this problem?

Have you checked the Adobe or Realtek websites for incompatibilities? That's about your only hope. I would imagine that anyone else using CEP 2.0 these days, especially with Vista, is either not using Realtek or is a beginner.

Why not just uninstall Realtek?

cool edit was given to me by someone who had it and never used it. i play acoustic, rarely ever recording more than three tracks, i don't use alot of effects so it serves me well. i'm technologically challanged so i didn't even realize it was badly outdated. could you suggest any free software that would allow me to do the same with less to no problem?

i got on dell support and asked if it was possible to uninstall the realtek. apparently realtek audio manager is a componant of vista and can't be uninstalled. they told me to install windows xp and replace the sound card.

the computer is less than a week old, if i can't get a replacement program that fits the bill i can always return this system for something more compatible.

thanks so much for the feedback and let me know about any software ;)
