Hello everyone! great forum here.

I have a question regarding my home studio setup.

What do people recommend for tracking: Cool Edit Pro 2.0 or Cubase VST? Does Cool Edit support VST plugs, or only DirectX?

How about for Editing/Mastering: Sound Forge 5 or Wavelab?

Thanks everyone!!

I'd recommend any of the major multitrackers for recording. I'd recommend Cool Edit 1.2 over Cool Edit 2.0, because 2.0's just been released and isn't as stable as 1.2.

Hmmm, I'm a Cubase user but I've heard lots of good things about Cool Edit.

Does CEP do MIDI recording and editing? I had heard that it didn't. If not, and you want to use midi, then your choice would be Cubase. CEP also doesn't support VST, but there's lots of great DX plugs out there.

Have fun,
Chris

CEP does not record MIDI, nor can you edit MIDI data in CEP. You can, however, open and play MIDI files in CEP 2.0. As far as the VST plugs, there's lots of VST wrapper programs available that basically convert a VST plugin to a DirectX plugin, allowing you to use them in CEP and other progs that don't support VST. There's a huge gap between CEP and Cubase when it comes to the learning curve. CEP is a breeze to learn, and you'll become more productive a lot faster. So, my vote is for CEP as a multitracker, though the MIDI aspect may be a problem for you. Sound Forge is an excellent wav editor, very easy to use, and comes with many usable FX. Wave Lab is a bit more complex, which seems to be the norm with Steinberg products. Cool Edit Pro is an ideal wav editor in its own right, but if you really need audio multitracking, wav editing capabilities, as well as MIDI editing features, CEP is not going to get it done for you. I would suggest you start stockpiling demo versions of all these programs ( like I did! ), and figure out what works best for you. Sonar is excellent, and on the lower-cost end, you may look into Fasoft's N-Track studio, which is real good, too. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

thanks everyone! i've decided to keep using Cool Edit 1.2.a Pro since i'm quite comfortable using it.

anybody know any sites that would have a VST wrapper program so i can use all my Cubase plugs in CEP? also, Do i need Sound Forge as a wave editor since CEP has the same plug support?

I am going to hopefully be using Reason as my MIDI recorder. Does anyone know of any conflicts?

No, you don't really NEED both Sound Forge and CEP as far as wav editing goes. But you will find that there are certain effects in Sound Forge that sound better than comparable effects in CEP, or vice-versa. For example, you may really like a certain reverb in Sound Forge, but can't find one in CEP that sounds the same, know what I mean? If you're not hurting for hard drive space, I think Sound Forge is small enough that it wouldn't hurt to keep it installed. As far as a VST to DX converter, here's a link to one of the more popular ones. http://www.fxpansion.com/ Good luck, and hang in there. You'll find the right stuff for your needs. Hope this helps.

I use reason and CEP all the time. Never had a problem.

I would recommend CEP as your base of operations and add waves gold bundle, steinberg mastering edition, Steinberg EQs, PSPs mixpack and vintage warmer as a straightforward, easy to learn and extremely powerful software solution.
