I finally got the money to transform my dark, gloomy barn into an insulated, air conditioned studio for the rock band I'm starting. Its the most uncomfortable environment you could imagine so im pretty excited about it. BUT, Im not sure what all i need to turn this thing into a true studio.

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE:
-$600-$1100
-All guitars and basses I would ever need
-Mesa Boogie Guitar Amp & Ampeg Bass amp
-Acoustic and Electric Drumset
-P4 2 GHz, 512 mb ram

THIS IS WHAT I NEED (TO MY KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE ADD ON!)
-Mic (MXL 990? i dont know)
-Mic preamp (nothin fancy, just need phantom power, right?)
-Sound Card (would prefer 5 inputs, is that possible to record 5 tracks
at once?)
-Software (CEP? Cakewalk? Sonar?)
-What else?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP GUYS,
Konrad

You are just goinig to make people mad by posting in 2 diffrent forums.

With that kind of budget, you might be able to put together a fun little recording scratch pad, good for composing and coming up with ideas ... maybe a few roughie demos to share with your family, girlfriend, etc.

I wouldn't expect much more than that.

You're going to need a mixer along w/ your soundcard to send the tracks to your computer. Now Mackie and a couple other manufacturers are now making mixers w/ integrated firewire & USB. These transfer all the tracks, not just the stereo mix like most people who buy stand alone mixers around here for recording. Look into those mixers w/ USB or firewire built in....ilike I said I know Mackie is making something w/ that now. You won't need a seperat soundcard if you get one of these.

YOu're also going to need a few mics. The one mic you have will "work" A couple overheads for your drums, snare, and kick mic are going to be important too.

Software, I don't use the PC to record, but you will need some sort of multi tracking program. Search the forums and you'll find TONS of information on this...

Monitors...gotta have something to listen to your music with...

There's much more you could use and you'll will find out that you really need after you really start messing around w/ it.

Hope you realize now you're just starting down a long and expensive road!!!

Hope this helps...

Hrm... that's a pretty skimpy budget. It wouldn't even cover the dry wall and ceiling costs, much less diffusors and bass traps.

I have almost as much money invested in 1/4" cabling as your entire studio budget. And that's for my *HOME* studio.

1100 doesnt account for the thousands that we are spending to insulate, air condition, couches, tv's etc. I want to spend 1100 on the supplies that i listed above (as i stated in the post above). thank you.

I'm not too worried about "roughness" of the demo, as are the local gigs that we are using this studio in order to create demos for. I think you lost sight of the most important factor in the quality of the recording... and thats the playing. ;) But thanks for the help anyway,
Konrad
