soo... i have started a bunch of songs and the ones in 24 bit sound great, plenty of headroom and more separation between instruments.

i have one song however recorded in 16 bit (forgot to change it to 24 and didn't realize) i am wondering if i can copy/paste the parts into a brand spankin new 24 bit project.... bearing in mind that for the most part i am using vst instruments... IK Sampletron, EZ drummer and loungelizard. I am under the impression that this will be possible as i will be simply copying commands (midi) that basically trigger samples.

any ideas.. i hope i do not have to record the whole thing again

much appreciated

As long as your tracks weren't clipping, I don't see why you would need to re-record. It all gets exported to 16-bit in the end anyway. :)

...and, looked at the other way, the conversion to 24 bit can't recreate whats not there and your recordings started at 16 bit bit depth. So long as you're using a decent DAW, it'lll be working internally at 24 bit or even 32 bit FP anyway.

If I buy a normal size bottle of wine and pour it into a litre bottle, I still don't have a litre of wine! (Darnit!)

i get what you guys are saying. but the midi/vst instruments technically wouldn't be recorded again as 16 bit.... would they?? because i am merely copy and pasting commands this time under a new 24 bit format. Which would render the parts now 24 bit as they are technically not audio to begin with. i would be re-recording the audio however

Your idea should work. But it might be possible to just change the bit depth of the session that you are working on. I can do that in cubase/nuendo.

oh yeah.... duh!! of course this would make much more sense

thanks :)
