convert to mp3

how do I convert an audio file(wave i guess??) to am mp3 so I can post samples of music I have recorded on my web site??

The encoder I use is based on LAME, which ironicaly stands for Lame Ain't an Mp3 Encoder. There's several frontends you can use for it, or you can use none at all and use the command prompt.

ok, but Im still lost! Can I go to shareware.com and down a program to convert???It seems the it should not be that hard. Are my recordingas in my computer a wave file?Thanks,Jim
