I hear a noticable "buzzing" or "humm" sound on my tracks in Cool Edit Pro when all is silent. Anyone else? Any way to avoid it?

do you have a recording soundcard or factory onboard? if its the factory soundcard...then id say thats your first suspect.

oh yea...a way to handle it...cool edit has some pretty nice noise reduction functions. highlight an area of the noise, then go to Effects > noise reduction > noise reduction. then...click capture profile from selection...or something like that...then select entire wave and apply the noise reduction...it will take the hum completely out of the track...pretty nice...

You can eliminate the noise after the fact with NR, but you may lose some of the musical content with it. A much better strategy is to find the source of the noise and attack it there. CEP by itself doesn't produce hum: it's in your equipment, or the way it's configured, or the sound card. There is a lot of information about getting rid of hum, from dressing your cables properly to using the right sort of interconnects, and I won't list them all here, but the type of noise may very well tell you where it is coming from. Good luck tracking it down.

If you can get all your gear running on the same electrical circuit when you're recording, that might help. It helped with my system.
