im trying to decide on a soundcard and mic preamps. now i've discovered that its dangerous to connect your monitors to your soundcard as windows has a tendancy to change the output volume of the soundcard without your intention. this could prove dangerous if it defaulted back to maximum volume. anyway, what sould i do to safegaurd against this. is there a soundcard/preamp solution which caters for monitors too?

yeah thats what i thought...but it seems like im spending more money just to control the monitor volume.

It just depends on your big picture. The mackies or soundcrafts preamps and EQ's are just as good or better than any other preamps under $500. If you were planning on buying more than one pre than a mixer becomes a pretty good value.

I've noticed that when I play a CD through winamp, Media Player or anything that the mixer will reset my CD level everytime it changes tracks. WHY IS THAT? Is there no way around it? It's stupid! So this same thing volume hijacking will happen no matter what soundcard setup I go with?

To be honest, I haven't seen that before, and I've had W95, W98, W98se, and Win2k. There's got to be a way around it. If it's only one app that's doing it (like Media Player), I'd look into that. If it's more than one app, it may be a setting on your sound card. I run my outs from the PC through an a/b/c switch and right into the monitors (and into the amp for the other set).

It may be dangerous, and I may be an idiot, but I haven't had any problems yet :)

I'm running Win 2K pro at work where this happens and I couldn't find anything that was set wrong but who knows what evil lurks in the mind of Bill Gates? I'm just simply trying to listen to some soft background music through the headphones while at work and the volume keeps changing back to the original setting as each track starts. I may try setting the CD audio level before I open winamp and see if that helps. Maybe it's a registry setting that is remembered and reloads everytime a new track starts.
