I'm kinda new with MIDI and wondering.
Is it doable to control SONAR (PLAYBACK, RECORD, REWIND, AUTO-PUNCH TOGGLE...) with my GR-30 using only the 4 "Foot Pedals" (with no guitar pluged in for example) and if so... how do I do it? :)
I'm using SONAR 8 atm.

Thx in advance!

I don't own a GR-30, but generally if you just plug the MIDI outs of a device into your MIDI interface and supply the device with sufficient power you can configure it with any DAW you have.

My guess is it's doable but...no clue how to do it :)
I really haven't worked much with MIDI in SONAR other than Pianoroll some drums or other inst.

Yes, it is do-able.

Configure the device to transmit MIDI sync messages.

Open Options > Project > Clock and click the MIDI sync option and click okay.

Remember that after making this change you will only be able to control transport functions via the outboard device, and not with a mouse or keyboard command.

Would it be possible to use the midi learn commands or even the ACT thingy. I have my CS set to use the transport controls, but I can still control them with my mouse and keyboard shortcuts.

Thx for the info c7

I don't think the Roland GR-30 have that sync option but I'll look it up.

There is no PLAY-RECORD-REWIND buttons on the GR-30 to my knowledge by the way. So how Sonar is gonna be able to link the Foot Pedal 1 from GR-30 to the Sonar RECORD function for example?

Will I be able to just keybind any Sonar function to any Pedals or Buttons on the GR-30?

Sorry again for my newbness ;)

I'm pretty sure you're going to have to look up which MIDI command each pedal sends and you are going to have to tell Sonar what you want each command to do.

With the learn function or ACT, I think you can pretty much map any function to the control of your choice.

So using the "generic control surface" pull up the properties window. That's where you should be able to asign say the play function to footpedal 1 etc. You may even be able to set up a jog function doing this.

Check out page 98 of the Roland manual.

It looks like the Roland DOES NOT transmit MIDI sync messages.

Sorry.

Well I guess it can't be done without pluging in the synth guitar in the GR-30 and it's pretty useless since I wanna control PLAY REC etc with my foot :P
I won't play the guitar with my foot to start record I'll just hit the damn "R" key on my keyboard :)

Or maybe just buy a basic "cheap" Foot Controller ? Any suggestions?

Something like that yeah but no wireless needed.
I basically just need REC, STOP, REWIND, PLAY so 4 Pedals would do.
It sucks that I have that GR-30 collecting dust tho.
Wish I could find a way to make it work with it.

Think I'm just gonna put my computer's keyboard on the floor and work on my toes skillz :D
