Hey all...

When putting sound absorbing foam on the walls... I've heard its not good to use symetrical patterns (mirror images to be exact) on opposite walls... especially if the walls are parallel. Is this true?

Unfortunately, I am setting up in a temporary control room and the walls are indeed parallel. I got a HUGE load of good quality sound absorbing foam and would like to treat the room as well as possible. I initally was going to put 8 1.5x4ft panels up on each of the back walls (left, right, and rear) in a pattern like this:

x.x.x
.x.x.
x.x.x

I was also planning on covering most of the front wall and spot treat the ceiling above the board as needed.

Any thoughts?

Yup - mirroring like that is the way to go. Alternative would be to build some angled frames for the side walls to break up the parallels.

ok John,

So you are saying I SHOULD make the left and right walls mirrored images of each other?

Let me ask you this too... if I were to put some strips of this foam angled in the back corners... would that help with standing waves? sort of like the bass diffusers, without spending the money to buy the "premade" ones?

Thanks,

wow.. cool... nice fast response with the picture John :)

What if I were to take these foam peices and slant them by putting another peice of foam under one edge... so it would look like your drawing, but there would be space behind the foam?

Thanks,

John,

Sorry for the multiple posts..

I've attached a picture of what I was thinking of doing.

Notice that the foam on the side walls is angled by placing another piece of foam behind it... this leaves a void behing the sheet of foam... is that a problem?

I also have two different angles for the foam... one taller than the other. I alternated them on opposite walls.

Thanks for the help... let me know what you think.

Yes but.

1. the angle should be the other way as I drew in my pic. 6 - 12 degrees.

2. There must be a rigid surface creating the angle so use MDF and place the foam over it.

John,

So in your drawing the left hand side is the front of the room?

Thanks for the info!
