Its not much bigger than the room I was going to use but probably shaped a little better... is this a decent size? Should I go bigger and shrink the live/drum room down? I'll go ahead and use the previous room I was going to use as a control room as the utility room that it was intended to be and as an iso room.

If you guys have better ideas or layouts feel free to post or email me a drawing... lets just say the room is 20x20, cause thats real close to the dimensions. Keep in mind that the ceilings are 18 feet, though I wont go that high in the control room, so whatever layout ideas you might have for the control room then give me some wall treatment ideas to go along with it.

If I make those 5 ft walls 6 footers, that makes an extra foot behind the mix station (on the window wall), or I could possibly come down 11 feet on both sides... hell I dunno... what would YOU do?

I don't know what your goals are with the studio but that looks like a decent sized iso booth and not a control room. If you build for isolation you are also going to lose about a foot for wall width.

I would go for a large symmetrical control room and have one or two small/med asymmetrical iso booths. You end up spending 95% of the time in the control room so it better be comfortable. Really the only thing you need isolation on are drums, guitar amps and maybe vocals. Most of the overdubs can be done in the control room. If you had one med sized room for drums and a small one for amps or vocals you would have a nice large control room for doing everything else.

The previous attached room I was going to use as a control room is now going to be one fo the iso rooms.
If you dont mind, maybe post or send me a drawing of what YOU would do with this space. I want it divided into drum room and control room, thats it, for now at least.
Thanks!
Paul

20x20' has plenty of room for multiple rooms if you wish.

I only drew two rooms, you're welcomed to complete the drawing if it floats your boat.

Upper left is the console room, lower left is a drum room. The room I drew is also 20x20' matching your sketch, and a full drumkit will fit into the lower left room.

Between the two are sliding glass doors as you can see. I didn't draw entry doors anywhere else because you didn't provide enough info. But, as you can see there is plenty of space on the right side of the drawing for vocal booths, a piano room, etc.

You could play around with this: :)
20'x20'.

Maybe decrease the size of the CR a bit.

Personally I prefer bigger rooms so I would do something simple like this.

Not the sort of a post I'd expect from a longtime member. The search function would have yeilded many results for 20 x 20 space. Like this one from a few weeks ago. That first drawing was quite disturbing  more like a cage than anything else. You can take this drawing and run with it. If it is on your house I would get rid of the bathroom and make just the CR, a small iso booth and a larger room. If you keep the bathroom, just have a CR, litle iso booth and a larger room where drums can fit. If you are going to build rat cages, then iI guess you can go to http://www.homeincarceration.com/bbs instead.

Well, its obviously not my area of expertise, and up until now I;ve never really had a space to build something into, therefore no need. Plus, its always seemed like a bunch of voodoo to me, so I've kind of steered around a lot of it.

Maybe I shoulda searched, but I figured a 20x20 with 18 foot ceilings would be rather uncommon. The ideas here are great, though, and although a bit more troublesome than I would have considered before, they have opened up some ideas. I'm trying not to waste any space, but I do really want to get some non-parallel walls going. I'm still mulling over it. Its gonna be cool no matter what, as I have become accustomed to recording in farm houses, barns, basements, attics, 8x8 rooms next to the drums, gymnasiums... you name it.... this is gonna be heaven, especially having a seperate control room. Perfect squares with some treatment would be FAR better than what I'm used to. The good thing is that I have learned to deal with and get around certain acoustical problems with a quickness.

Thanks for all the ideas!

Small control rooms may not be the most ideal, but they can be made to work. My 8x8 ft room is shaped similar to your original post. The angled wall you have identified for a window is where my door is, and the opposite corner contains an angled bass trap. My mix position is facing into the bass trap, and I pretty much covered most of the walls and ceiling with rigid fibergalss covered in cloth. The room sounds great and my mixes work (the bottom line for any mixing environment). It's cozy but I don't feel cramped while I'm working.

That being said, I'd love to have a room like any of the ideas thrown out by Michael Jones, Frederic, or Kristian. Of course, my next, first priority is to convince my wife I need to build a "real" vocal booth rather than rely on hanging curtains.

Good luck. Sounds like fun to be had (both in the planning and in the completion; construction sucks and takes longer than you think).

Cheers,
Darryl.....
