there is a theory that all advances in human civilization have been based on our ability to harness more power. starting with fire, the wheel, the mule, slavery, the steam engine, the combustion engine, coal plants, etc, etc.... I think its one of the reasons the pyramids are such a source of wonder... we are now facing a world in which available power is decreasing, and there are warnings of a regression of civilization. The most recent source of power we have come to know is processing power...and I am interested to see if it proves to be as useful as conventional physical work. Of course it is dependent on other sources of power itself. Right now china is sort of like the US was in the 1800s.... purposely devaluing their currency in order to depend on extremely cheap labor as their source of power to move their economy forward...I think eventually they will come out of it.

Until we no longer have a "most favored nations", agreement with China, there is going to be an endless supply of manufactured goods streaming in from them. The best way to run a country into the ground is to export raw materials and import manufactured goods, in fact that was the actual reason for the American revolution. The profit involved for a few short-sighted businessmen is temporary, as the capital they build up will become inflated and worthless as the trend continues. None of this, however, stops me from buying Chinese telecasters, due to my incredible and unswayable hypocrisy. Hopefully, the vast majority of Americans is unlike me, but I doubt it.

I've been trying to NOT buy Chinese for 10 years or so, but now there is nothing else in many cases because everyone else buys it. This is one reason I’m a fan of vintage equipment… it’s the only way to buy American. I’m not really talking Yankee patriotism in this case, although being an 8th generation American (1690’s) I have plenty of that.
What I’m talking about here is buying products from their countries of origin that made them with care instead of outsourced crap from China. For me that means buying only TASCAM made in Japan, Behringer made in Germany, Yorkville made in Canada, Lexicon and Alesis made in the USA, etc. If it wasn’t for needing parts and support for legacy equipment I would say screw all these companies, and I hope they die an agonizing death.
There isn’t much new I’m interested in, mainly because of quality control issues. Most everything I need was made better 15 – 20 years ago. So like the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) maxim, “There are no old movies; just movies you haven’t seen yet” or something like that.
Anyway, I have the same perspective when shopping for equipment. I might discover some great 30-year-old device, and I don’t give a rat’s ass that it’s not in the latest Sweetwater catalog. I don’t care about the latest buzz whatsoever. Of course I’ve always been like that… it might take some practice for others.
