one thing the audigy 2 does have going for it that the others do not is DVD-Audio support...so I wouldn't say it is not an "audiophile" card to appease the masses :P

How usefull is that really?

Think about it - you're going to listen to DVD-A on your PC??

It doesn have the individual outputs like standalone DVD-A players so it can't be connected to a 5.1 receiver either...

I even doubt sound quality would be comparable to a standalone DVD-A player.

dude, go read this. :) Read the section of Audigy 2 ZS Internal I/O Drive Front Panel Connectors.

Not quite the same thing. One output for left/right surrounds???Try connecting a SB to a 5.1 receiver via SPDIF and see if you get Dolby Digital surround sound. Ain't gonna happen...

Do your research - SB's cannot connect to external Dolby Digital receivers/decoders.

The only soundcards capable of this are ones found on nForce2 motherboards with Soundstorm.

Hmm... Really now. I had figured that it was just the same sort of output as on a DVD player or on a digital satellite box, which i know you can get dolby digital off of a dvd player. My bad. *shrug*

do YOUR research

Once again Bra-zilla, your know-it-all attitude has gotten you into trouble.

"How usefull is that really?" - Very useful if you've already got a PC or want to build a HTPC and not spend $500 or more just to be able to listen to DVD-Audio.

"Think about it - you're going to listen to DVD-A on your PC??" - If you have a surround sound speaker system and a dvd player, why not? If you only have a stereo speaker system you still get it at the advanced 24-bit/192khz...did you know that bra-zilla?

"It doesn have the individual outputs like standalone DVD-A players so it can't be connected to a 5.1 receiver either..." - heres where you should have taken your own advice and doen some research, I picked this review out of many I have looked at:
***Output wise the Audigy 2 is fairly flexible, too, supporting up to 6.1 channel Analog output***
A lesson for you bra-man, these analog outputs connect to your SS receiver and are sent out to the speakers, the Audigy2 decodes the MLP signal (maybe you should look that one up too).
DVD-Audio is not sent via SPD/IF anyways.

"Do your research - SB's cannot connect to external Dolby Digital receivers/decoders." - sound kinda stupid now, huh?

Since you obviously don't do research, i'll tell you how it works...the 1/8" mini's on the back of the sound card can carry 2 channels a peice..using a mini to dual rca connector you can plug 6 discreet analog signals straight into the 6 analog inputs on your 5.1 surround receiver....which..by the way is already decoding DD and DTS if you got a good one..so the htpc is an appliance for DVD-A/Games/Etc...

please keep your mouth where it belongs..firmly wrapped around your foot.

Where are you buying audio equipment? Panasonic sells DVD/DVD-A players for $120. A surround sound receiver with speakers can be found for $300 at Best Buy.

How much does your HTPC setup cost you when you're done? $200 for a top of the line Audigy plus a $800 PC? What about speakers? How is that cheaper than a dedicated HT setup?

If you only have a stereo speaker system you still get it at the advanced 24-bit/192khz...did you know that bra-zilla?

The whole point of DVD-A is 5.1 surround. Otherwise its a waste of the extra capacity of DVD media and your money. Why then buy a DVD-A rather than the regular CD? The difference from 16bits to 24 is sujbective at best if you are using mediocre speakers.

I'm not only talking about DVD-A here. Why settle for less by going analog so early in the chain? The nForce motherboards have true digital 5.1 outputs which is what the Audigy does not have. That is the only point I was trying to make there.

GRRRRRR!

i think we just love to argue!

You have answered in a much more noble manner than I, and for that I am to be shamed...SHAME!!! SHAAAAAME!

..forgive me..

My purposes for an HTPC would be far more than just DVD-Audio..but i'll not get into that.

i have looked and looked for dvd-audio players but 120 is far below anything i have seen....

...got a link???

:P

hmm... Am I the only one who's laughing his ass off at all the mention of "DVDA"?

lmao...
