Taking the slow road
Rarely is the first draft the final version.

The problem in believing this is in all of the stories we hear of how people wrote a song in 3 minutes or woke up and wrote it and went back to sleep. Those people usually have been writing for so many years, that their subconscious has taken over the craft that their conscious mind has worked on for a looong time.

It's fun to get inspired, but then work is required.

It could take time, it should take time, especially considering that once it is recorded, you can't go back and edit; by then, it's too late.

Isn't that what re-mixes are for? :)

This needs the "two hat" approach - you write something wearing your creative hat. Let it sit for a day, a month, whatever, come back with your critical hat on.

Aaron might chip in here, he's excellent on this topic.
