I am a firm believer that if all bolts were one size, and there was only one type of plug, the world would be a better place. Well, maybe not, but it gives me an excuse for not having a clue what I am doing.

I play the acoustic guitar, and I want to record some of it. Right now, I just want to play around and see what I can do. I may decide later on once I get a better understanding on how all of this works to record some demo tracks of the songs I have written.

I really don't have that much to spend at all, so I want to keep it as minimal as possible. However, I would much rather add to my gear than have to replace it later on down the road for being too cheap.

I have decided on using a SM57 mic to record the guitar (and the vocals when that time comes). I have an audigy platinum ex soundcard, and so my question comes in how all of this should connect together.

Outside of the mic and computer, what else do I need? Is any of this extra stuff optional at the moment so I can take this time to play around and then add it later on when I want to do demos?

This soundcard seems to have weird ports. I can't get any of my headphones to plug into the headphone jack. No one I asked could come up with what these things are, and since you are all audio people, I figured that you would know.

I will further my act of ignorance in asking what plugs into the MIDI ports? Recording midi files would be very nice, but I have a feeling that it requires more expensive hardware than I am currently worth.

Thanks for your time in raising my intelligence.

The cards breakout box has RCA and 1/4" plugs.
You can get a external preamp to patch your guitar and mic thru and into the box. Look at what you have and match the cables up.
You will need recording software to multitrack. (try a free demo)
sooner than later you will decide to go a bit more pro.
