Hi everyone.

I'm a little stuck. I've recorded onto a digital 4 track and now want to record the track to mp3 by connecting the 4 track to the computer. When I do this through the mic input it sounds dreadful. Will it work if I buy a phono to usb connection and go that way or is there a better way?

Cheers

More info...

Brand/Model of digital 4-track...I/O options...computer A/D card and I/O options...etc.

You should be able to connect the two digitally SPIDF, AES, ADAT....not the mic input.

The 4 Track's a Yamaha MD4S.

Now here's where I show my ignorance of my computer. It's a PC laptop, the new Windows, rubbish sound card I think... Realtek or something (I'm not too sure).

There's a couple of USB intputs, a mic, headphones, nothing super exciting looking.

Is that info any use to you?

I can't tell if that model has s/pidf out or not - its a mini disc recorder right? you might be able to read the disc in a CD-ROM drive but I am not really sure about the format so it may not work at all.

At any rate you do not want to use your mic or line in on any sound card that isn;t specifically build for high-end audio recording (eg an interface) -

Chances are you need to get an audio interface that will take the analog output of the recorder and convert it to digital and send to your computer (via USB).
