I am looking forward to getting the Fostex D2424LV in a few weeks, and I'm just trying to figure out how I am supposed to hook it up to my gear.

I'll be using the Analog inputs and outputs mostly. My Mixer has Direct Outs (postfade-postEQ). It also has channel inserts. Do I hook up the recorder into the Channel inserts during a recording session? Then just hook it up to the channel when I am mixing it down? Does it allow me to monitor from the output what I am recording into the input?

I just realized that I am pretty clueless how this thing is supposed to be connected !!

I would appreciate any help.....

Thanks

Gus

Fostex

It will work either way, but insert cables are much more expensive than a simple 1/4" snake cable. I use 3, 8 channel snakes (24 tracks) Since I mostly only record a few tracks at a time, I simply use a tube MP, Joe meek or other Preamp module to feed a patch bay that is connected to the Fostex inputs.

When recording a full band, I use the direct outs from my mixer to send 8 or more channels to the recorder via the patch bay.

My mixer will allow a signal from the mike XLR input and 1/4" line input to co-exist, maybe you will have to un plug or throw a switch during tracking and then back for play back?

Sincerely;

DOM

oh yeah

I was hoping to keep all my connections balanced, so I guess through the inerts channel isn't going to work the best. And I don't want to record from the direct outs because they are post-fade and such.

Crap! This was supposed to be easy!! Looks like I'll have to either use a spare mixer purely as a set of preamps, or get a standalone preamp in order to keep the connections balanced...........

unless anyone knows some cool secret trick..........

Fostex D2424LV Installation

I have a fostex D2424LV, and I just purchased a 9044 Hard Drive Caddy. I would like to install the caddy myself, is anyone aware of any special features or the reason why Fostex Says an authorized service center has to install this piece of equipment? because the service centers and dealers around here don't know squat about this piece of gear.

I think..........

I think I remeber there being info on installing drives and such in the quick start guide that is available for download from the fostex website. Check that out and see if it is of help.

You don't need any thing special!

Just put the 2nd hard drive in the caddy and connect the ribbon cable and insert into the top slot. I have two caddys and swap them out all the time.

You will however have to go to an authorized service center to install a second unit or DVD drive in the bottom bay.

Hi Dom,

While what you say is correct according to the official Fostex recommendation, if someone is comfortable putting hard drives into PCs and they are reasonably mechanically inclined, putting a second hard drive bay in a Fostex D2424LV isn't a big deal. I've helped a freind put one in and I've put one in my own machine, it wasn't particularly hard and both work great.

Dont forget to use an ultra dma hard disk cable (the wires/ribbon look a lot thinner than a floppy disk style cable). It wont work properly without it.
I added a second internal hard disk which I just fitted using a pc 5 1/4 drive bay adapter. Used the 80 gig drive and now back up to it for safety.
It was a very cheap way of doing it.. just the £80 for the drive, about £5 for the adapter and about £5 for the cable.

SCV london are excellent if you need support or even fitting.
