Hi
I just got this old 59' Zenith speaker (with a 12'' and a little tweeter) from a salvation army. I think it went to an old record changing station. The speaker cable was all jacked up so I bought some to replace it with. What I want to do is connect the speakers to my Fender Deville's External speaker output. Just looking for a little help as to what kind of connector I need to solder to the speaker cable (1/4" jack on the back of the amp) or if this is even doable. Thanks in advance

Before you do anything, check the impedance on the output of your Deville. It is important to match the speaker with this or you could run into potential problems.

Could you go into a little detail as to how I'll do this to make sure it's safe?
Appreciated

Thanks Washburn100. That was a great quick lesson for me. I'll check the minimum ohms on the deville and check the speakers with a meter.

Now as far as what I need to do to the speaker wire to be able to plug them into the 1/4" external speaker jack...? Anybody?

Not quite sure what you are asking here, but I'll assume. Starting at the deville, sounds like you need to get speaker wire into a plug to go into the Deville. Well, you can buy a 1/4"TS plug for a $1-2 something like this:

Now, you need to identify what wire is positive and which one negative. Usually the pos will have a stripe on it or will be copper colored and the neg silver colored.

Solder the pos wire to the tip of the plug, and the neg to the outside of the plug and away you go.

Okay, so I've made my own guitar cables before, let me try to relate to that because I do have an extra right angle ts 1/4 jack. I'm going to solder the positive wire to where I would normally solder the center conductor of an instrument cable; And I'm going to solder the negative wire where I would usually put the ground (On the shield).

Shoot me down if I'm wrong

By the way, if you get the pos and neg backwards, guess what happens?

No, nothing blows up, but the speaker works 180 degrees out of phase. That when the speaker should be firing forward, it will be firing backward. Not a problem by itself, but if you have 2 speakers and one is out of phase, they can end up cancelling each other out because the are moving exactly opposite of each other. You will hear audio people talking about things being out of phase, and this is a good example. The other place it happens is when you use 2 microphones. Just a bit of physics for a Friday afternoon!

Alright, you totally knocked out all my questions and concerns! How much do I owe you? Haha.. Have a great weekend

So I just finished wiring the cab and hooked it up to the Deville. Pretty cool, once I hit it above 3 on the clean channel the zenith cab fuzzes up. I like it. The tubes seem to be running a little hotter. The zenith reads 8 ohms and the deville suggests ext speakers be 4 ohms. I figured it would be okay as long as it wasnt less than 4.
