Connecting Drum machine, keyboard, recorder via MIDI

I've got a Boss DR 770 (drum machine), Triton Pro keyboard and Yamaha AW16G digital recorder/mixer. I want to lay my drum sequences in the 770, the rest of the composition in my Triton, then combine it all on the AW16G. How can I connect the three via MIDI (and audio) simultaneously?

Also, what about if I wanted to build the track as I went along (instead of completing the individual parts in their entirety then dropping them to the AW16G? How could I get it so I could drop the triton sequence to the AW16g, for example, then hear that playing back while I experimented with the drums over top of it? (I know I could do it in straight audio, but do the MIDI connections need to configured differently from the first scenario I asked about in order to record directly to the AW16g with the drum machine, then edit parts as needed-- using the onboard editing tools of the AW16G)

I appreciate any feedback-

Does the Yamaha even have a sequencer? You will probably just need to record the audio and work with that. Or you can sequence on the Triton and dump the audio into the Yamaha when you are ready.

Tex,

I'm assuming you were asking about the Boss Drum Machine...yes it has a sequencer. The Yamaha Recorder has the standard editing functions...cut, paste, move, etc. So I know I could sequence my drums in the drum machine then dump lay them down on the AW16g, with the AW16g controlling the drum machine's tempo, etc. I also want to use the triton's internal sounds to create the actual melodies, then combine it with the drums that were already laid on the AW16g. I'm just wondering how I can connect all three pieces of equipment via MIDI so that I have options about the order in which I lay them to the recorder, and can edit them with everything being synced tempo with, etc.

Are you sequencing on both the triton and the boss, or just sequencing on the boss and playing the triton live?

I figured out what to do. I'll be putting together the drum sequence on the Boss, the rest of the music on the triton, them combining both elements in the recorder. Basically I'll daisy chain all three pieces- recorder to triton to drum machine to recorder, connecting the audio outs of the drum machine and triton to separate tracks on the recorder, then control both other machines with the recorder.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.

Leffield - please let us know how you get on. I have been trying to MIDI-synch an AW16G and a Korg Trinity, and just can't make it happen. If I set the AW16G as Master, when I hit play on its transport the Korg sequencer doesn't start, it just jumps to the end of the sequence.

Doing it the other way around, using the Korg as master and the AW16G as slave, seems to do nothing at all. Any ideas?

SHARP: I had some problems with that as well. I think you have to set the AW16g to RECORD, as opposed to just pressing play on the transport.

I know that going into Global and slaving the Triton enabled the AW16G to start the sequence (when I hit play AND record). When I get home this evening I'll bring up the Utilities screen in the AW16g and give you the specs used there. My concern was bringing the drum machine into the fold. I now see I just need to set a separate MIDI channel (I am assuming channel 10) for the drum machine. I'll let you know whats up.

Thanks Leff - funnily enough I've just done it. Spent ages yesterday, couldn't get it working, came home today, set AW16G as master, MIDI and Clock (not MTC) out, works beautifully. Don't need to press record - works either way. Beats tapping out a tempo before you hit "play" on the 5th beat!!

Interesting you use a drum machine - I found the Korg drum sounds to be better than the Boss, albeit fewer of them, and it's easier using the keyboard than those little pads and the sequencer's less fiddly.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Garry, some of it is laziness/convenience and a portion is laziness, in not developing my sample chopping techniques. Triton stock sounds are cool, but have a certain metallic/tinny essence to them that is very distinctive. So I need to switch it up on my tracks. Granted, I could stand to dig into the program settings and alter the basic sounds more...but in the short term, the drum machine is adding some nice spice to my pieces. Also, it has some functions the triton does not (drum rolls on command/ flams). So, I like it. I'm looking into layering my kits now using the tritons sounds and the drum machine layed over top of it...

Once I actual master all the triton capabilities, I'm scared to think of what my joints will sound like...
