New to post and searched for related topics but could find none. I have an edirol usb2. It has 10 channel in and very nice I maight add. My question is: I usually just run out of my guitar preamp into the outboard soundcard and get a nice signal and a quality sound. When doing vocals, this edirol has a preamp built in and will accept 4 mics. I also have a compressor (NC) and an untimizer pro. I also have a makie 12 channel mixer. Would it benefit the quality of the vocal recordings (singing) to run the compressor and/ or the ultimizer through a loop on my mixer and then into the edirol? What would be the pro's and con's of this? Also, and although subjective, which is felt to have a better quality with guitars; running the preamp (Boss rnu- really nice unit) direct into the sound card or micing the amp I have (marshall mx100 1/2 stack.) have two AKG regualr and one RNC- really nice condensor. Thanks, Bill

in response to the vocals... on your sound card does it have a send for the pre so you can run it through the outboard gear then back into one of the converters? on my motu 828mkii there is a send for the 2 mic pre's so if I wanted i could run it through outboard gear then patch it back into anolog 1(or any of the other converters) and for guitar i always recommend micing an amp if you have the capability to get the amp loud, have good mics, good pres, and a decent sounding room. it also helps if you have isolation(maybe throw the cabinet in a bedroom or something and run a speaker cable from the head(in the control room by the computer) to the cabinet in the other room). This allows you to play along with the recording and get a good sound and hear what it is going to sound like in the mix through your speakers or headphones.
