Now I know you are all gunan say...

"You get what you pay for..."

But, I'm on a tight budget, I'm not exactly sure how tight it is as of now though. Basically, I'm looking for 3 mics. I need one to record vocals (large diameter condensor?) and pair for overheads and acoustic instruments (small diameter condesors?).

I've seen the marshall mics and they look to be in a good price range? But are they half decent? Maybe I could save up for a c-1 *drools*?

Right now I have an Sm-57, a Beta 52 a Pg-58 and a cheap radio shack mic. I use a mackie 1202 mixer and a 24/96 card. My room I'm recording in has no acoustic treatment (basement or livingroom) so I'm almost always close micing.

Thanks for your help,
Chris

I'd recommend three Oktava's.....an Mk 319, and a pair of MC 012's. Get an omni capsule to go with the 012's and add a couple of different flavour preamps when you can, and you'll be able to cover a lot of basses with that inexpensive combo.
But then of course there's............

Yes, of course there's more! You can get a pair of Marshall MXL603s for about $150 and an Studio Projects B1 for $80. It'll give you a good idea of what different kinds of mics can do. If you're like the rest of us this will only be the beginning!

I don't think I can get oktavas.

There isn't a music store within 8 hours of where I live...

Stupid Canada lol

I mostly get my eqipment from mail order companys such as American musical.

Isn't oktava a brand owned by guitar center?

I also really enjoy eBay, as I don't mind buying used.

Cool

I took a look at the 603's and they seem to be at the top of my list.

What about a large diaphram condensor for vocals?

Awsome....

Wow, If Harvey recomeneds those mics, I know they are awsome...

Harvey is my god.

lol

Personally I have the SP C1 which I like alot. I've read lots of good things here about the B-Series though if budget is really an issue.

wx3 i live in Canada as well. I'm near vancouver. Whats the web address for american music? americanmusic.com?

Isn't it a bitch finding ANYTHING in Canada? No one ships to Canada. You greedy american bastards better start shipping to us or we'll unleash our army of mutated polar bears on you.

Hey Harvey what's up?

I read your article about recording... you know the 25 page long one.... and it really opened up my eyes and helped me to understand things much better.

I just wanna say,

THANKS!

P.S. Is there anywhere where we could hear samples of your recordings?

WX3- I'm concerned that better condensers will furthermore inform you about your room demons. I would probably spend the money on room conditioning and use the Beta 58, but if you must- I'd consider skipping the small diaphragms for now and buying a pair of B-1's. $80 apiece, they're good instrument mics and fair vocal mics. Even 1 B-1 would be a good place to start with condensers. If you really want a pair of small diaphragm condensers, the 603's are a very good deal. I prefer the Oktavas, mostly because of the pads and the interchangeable capsules. For a cheap main vocal mic, Marshall MXL V67B seems to be a good one, at half the price or so of a C-1. If I was going to do it, I'd buy a V67 and a pair of B-1's. A good, versatile pair of instrument mics. When you order, specify that you want the same color dot on both boxes, they're roughly matched. That would give you 2 vocal options, and the closest thing to a matched stereo pair you're going to get in your budget.-Richie

Hey WX3!

Here in Ontario we can get most of what you want via retail, but I have used US mail order anyway.

Hope you have luck at some previous suggested retailers.

Personally I have bought from SamAsh in the past, and they delivered with the goods. They shipped UPS, provided tracking #'s etc, and I received goods within about 7-10 business days.

I did try to buy a V67B from Mars Music once for ship to here in ONT. They were totally useless.

A pair of SP B-1's would be a pretty sweet option, at an amazing bargain. A pair of V67B would be good too. Then you could pick the small diameter condenser of your choice for acoustic mic. Personally, I have a pair of ECM8000 that suit my purpose fine (and were a steal at $70CDN a peice).

You can get Studio Projects, MXL, Behringer, etc stuff from Long & McQuade's. Check out Van, they might have an outlet that'll mail to you.

Good luck!

Yeah I'm a little worried about that. I've been listening lately to my house and its not exactly dead silent. I can't condition my room because I'm only 16 and my parents would kick my ass lol...

It's not a Beta 58 its a 52 and I use it primarily on kick drum and some other things to experiment with.

I still think im gunan go with the 603's and maybe a C1....
