My computer is a fairly new athlon 850 I beleive, bassically my computer is becasue the main fan is, it tends to rattle/squael sorta at times, if not alwaya more or less, I hate this with a passion, but I need to replace the whole part connected to the fan to get a new fan so, that's atleast 100$ I don't have, Anyway, my concern I don't know if It's teh fan or just how computers are in general, but where my headphone's plug-in etc where the soundcard would be around and actually teh whole compter tend sto be slightly shaking at all times, just enuff to tell, it's shaking adn feel teh vivrations on your hand.

Wouldn't this effect me in many ways...? Is this a problem? I know I'm looking too deep, but it seems like it would deffinitely have some sort of impact. Sometimes I think myby it's better to get a 300 cpu computer, becasue newer computers tend to need faster spinning fans, and I think this is the main source of the noise and vibrations of the motherboard.

can anyone say anything about this or relate with their own computer...?

Also my brother has a slightly slower computer, I think around a 500 cpu and his makes aboit 1/5 the noise as mine, and doesn't even have any noticable vibrations/shaking of teh mother board.

I'm feeling like mayby I got ripped off in the grand sceme of things by getting a fast computer. Or mayby it's just this model, don't know, I'm hoping it's just the fan on this computer is very intense and can fix it with another.

So what you're saying here is, that computer technology is going to be limited by vibrating fans? Hehe.

It sounds like you've got a shakey fan in there some place. Could be the case fan, the CPU, northbridge fan (on some mobos), or power supply fan. It is for the most part nothing to worry too much about, but should eventually be fixed. It would take a qualified technican about a minute to determine the culprit. It would take you about two minutes. Just pop open the hood and figure it out...it's not as scary as it seems. A new fan will not cost you $100. A CPU fan & heatsink will run about $15. A case fan maybe $5-10. A power supply fan about the same, but replacing them is somewhat dangerous and in that case it is usually advised to replace the power supply ($25-50). And so on and so forth. If you have to take the machine in to get this job done, it could cost you a hundred bucks, so either learn on your own or get your self a geek friend.

Hey Slack. Amidst all this noise that the Athlon rocks economically relative to the P-IV, how about that temperature management? Do Athlons run hotter (and thus need more robust cooling systems to survive, or even run stable) than their equivalent Pentium competition?

thanks!

YEah, I deffintely popped the door off my motherboard, then used my fingers to stop each fan to see the culprit, and it seems the power fan makes the rattleing noise occasionally, i think, and the little fan I already got replaced becasue I wanted a quieter fan for 20$ is the squealer when it gets going too quick, I guess.
Right now my computers never been quieter, it has habit of being less noisy everytime it pushes me to the brink of taking it in. so I've changed my mind... Don't know which way to call it. mayby It's just a mtter of how hot my computer gets I guess. mayby if I keep my room at freezing temperature it will always be good...

DrStawl - both P4 and Athlon run pretty darn hot, but I have been told that the K7 tends to run hotter. Never stuck my finger in there to find out....

I dunno...I usually just slap the biggest cheap rig I can find on my processors, trying not to spend over $15 for a fan/heatsink combo. Use good thermal compound and all will be well.

One thing I do know is that people always freak out about heat with new processors. I remember that fans/heatsinks became standard during the later 486 days, when they hit like 66 and 100Mhz. Then when the Pentium came out man "you have to put a good heatsink on that thing because those Pentiums run hot!" Well, I've got Pentium machines around here with no fans or heatsinks that have been running for months non-stop. I recently had a PII-266Mhz processor lose a fan, and I slacked off replacing it. The thing ran fine for about a month before I replaced the fan out of guilt.

I'm not saying that it would be wise to take the heatsink off your processor or anything dumb like that, I just think it's funny how we react to new computer equipment. As soon as the shit gets old we treat it like crap but golly, it still seems to function. I recently put together a system out of spare parts that were crammed in a junk drawer. No anti-static bags, no padding...just crap in a smashed in a drawer. I don't use special precautions when dealing with any of my equipment...unless it's brand new. I make fun of people who wear those anti-static braclets. :)

Anyways, no point to this...just blabbing.

Hey! When I used to tech, I wore those static bracelets, like you put it, "out of guilt." Actually, I wore them when others were around, but not when no one else was there.

This reminds me of a Cyrex 6x86 150+ that I have collecting dust. The damn thing would run so hot, that it kept frying the processor fan. I'd replace the fan, then the new one would eventually start sporadically cutting out. I usually wouldn't notice it until everything locked up. Damn Cyrex's.
