Hello all, as you can tell I am new to the board, and I am new to digital recording, however I plenty of studio/engineering time on the analog side albiet along time ago!
I have searched the forum archives and found some answers that were close but not really what I have a question about. So here it goes...
First lets get the computer specs out of the way, it is a Dell Optiplex 240 with 512 megs of RAM, Intel Pentium 4 1.8 ghz cpu, 80 gig hardrive running Win 2000. This computer is what I run my business off of and I am extreemly concerned about crashing it!
With that said, my goals are just to produce songs by myself and maybe one other person at the same time, using acoustic and electric guitars. I do not see my compositions at least at this time, requiring a "boat load" of tracks but that could change down the road.
When I first started researching this idea, I was thinking about getting something like Cakewalk Home Studio getting a interface and doing everything on the computer, because I liked all the options/potenntial available. All was fine until I started digging a little deeper and realized some of the potential problems that can crop up with computer recording.
So then I started looking at a small 8 track recorder like the Boss BR 8, simple and easy to use, no elaborate computer set up etc. At this point that I what I am thinking about starting with. After reading some posts here about combining the two ideas, I have come up with some questions.
First, is software like Home Studio less demanding on a computers resources than the more expensive Cakewalk products?
Second, if I record the tracks on the Boss, and mixdown/master on Cakewalk am using less of my computer resources thus hopefully reducing the chance of a computer crash? Also going this route, would I be able to do this with out having to add an additional hard drive?
I am sure these questions have been ask before and I apologize to those you that are annoyed by this, but I searched the forums until I was blue in the face, and finally just decided to post.
Thank You in advance for your time.
Sincerely,
Todd
