Hi,

I´m thinking about upgrading my P3-700mhz to something a bit better.
I guess it will be some Intel 775-socket processor, but I´m not sure which one.
My candidates are:
dual-core E2220
core2duo E4700
maybe even E7200, but it costs a bit too much

Then I was thinking that some Opteron could be possible too, like the Opteron 1214, 1216, 1218 (the 1218 costs about the same as the E7200).

This all with cca 2GB ram, running XPs with a PCI 8in 8out soundcard, using Reaper as the main DAW.

So what do you recommend?

"Upgrading"???

If you're talking about replacing the guts of the computer, don't do it.

Built a NEW computer but keep the old one and set up a home network.

Reaper's 'ReaMote" will let you use the old computer over a home network to process your VST plugins (and you'd pay $1500 for a box like a Receptor to do that).

Really cool and it's FREE with Reaper....

Thanks for the suggestion, I know that Reaper supports that, but 700mhz is REALLY slow for that, I have here an AMD 64 3000+ on LAN that I could use for exactly the same, but can´t really use it as DAW because it´s father´s computer in his office.

I am planning to change all the guts of the old computer, beacuse the case just suits my needs for disk slots etc, and is really quiet.

As for the other things, most probably 2x300GB hdds in mirror for data, and some 80gb for system, no graphics card or any other "gamer" things.

Budget. Budget budget budget. How much are you going to spend?

So I tried to recount it for USD, and it is something like 250$, that is for CPU, MB, 2gig ram.

I have no idea... naturally... what prices or availability is like where you live. I don't live at the Motherlode (Japan/Taiwan) but it sure doesn't bite here in Southern California, and my recommendations are based on this constraint. All prices are courtesy of www.mwave.com which I can drive to and which is located in the City of Industry, Southern California, United States.

I don't know if they ship internationally or what barriers to trade government has thrown up where you live. This works for me because I do not have to factor in variables such as sales tax, VAT, shipping, customs, etc...

GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H amd 780g chipset micro ATX form factor 1xPCI-E(x16)/1xPCI-E(x1)/2xpci/4xddr2 w/integrated vga,sata2 raid,lan(gb),esata,hdmi,1394,usb 2.0 & audio (cpu type:amd - socket am2)
$89.50

This mobo supports AMD and is a very interesting mobo in that it has FireWire, eSATA, HDMI, and a integrated display adapter. It would work equally well as a workstation or as the center of a home theater system.

ATHLON X2 5600 2.9G - BRISBANE
$122

2GB DDR2 800 of MWAVE (generic) memory.
$37.50

Lots of people sneer at non-branded memory, preferring name brands like Kingston, but I've built a dozen system using Mwave's memory and never had a problem.

Apologies that I could not be more helpful.

This config is $3 over...
