I am using the Tascam US1800 to record. After I record I can play back what I recorded through my computer speakers, but I cant hear anything WHILE I'm recording... essentially, they aren't working as monitors.

the headphone jack on the tascam works just fine... but i don't have any monitors currently and my computer speakers are very good and have served me well thus far.

So how can I use my computer speakers as monitors?

I could probably get adapters and plug them into the tascam but thats kind of a hassle.

thx guys.

correction:

when the tascam is on, no sound comes from the computer speakers. when i turn it off, sound does come out.

What daw?

You'll probably have to set up your daw's output to output to your computer's sound card. I don't know how the tasczm works, but you'll probably have to make the changes in your daw's settings.

No matter what you have for monitors in your set up you would definitely not want them on and monitoring as you are recording. ;) . That is what closed back headphones are for.

MOnitoring with speakers while recording is OK if you are not using a mic for recording (keyboard, guitar, amp DI into the interface). You didn't say what computer speakers you have, but most are POS. Plug them into your interface, rather the line-out of your computer and you'll get sound out of them while recording.

Microphones only -- Forgot to add that ..... thanks Mike.

Too much of a hassle to get adaptors?

That's the way it's supposed to work. Just do it.

They're not working as monitors because they are not connected as monitors.

The headphone jack works because it is connected to your interface. Your speakers aren't.

Connect them to your interface.

It's a small hassle to have to go through. Do it.

Then you cannot monitor the recording process (track) with the speakers - FEEDBACK! Track with headphones, listen to the recorded tracks with the speakers. Headphones and speakers should be plugged into your interface.

use the mute button during tracking with a mic.

Okay my DAW is Logic 9. My operating system is.. snow leopard? i think?

So is there a way to change the output of the TASCAM to go through the computer instead of the monitor outputs? I'm gonna get adapters but i'd still like to know for future reference.

I usually mix via studio headphones, because its easier to do stereo imaging, but other people in the room cant hear it. I just want some speakers so i can show other people what they just played. My speakers (http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Inspire-Multimedia-Speaker-Technology/dp/B0028N6YH0) are decent. They could use a bit of a mid range boost but they are by no means bad.

A lot of studios phase flip one of the two speakers and send a mono mix to them with the speakers placed so that they more or less null at the vocal mic. They also place them in the rejected area of the mic pattern
Good tutorial at RONAN'S RECORDING SHOW
Can be really good if the vocalist is not comfortable in headphones and can give a much more natural performance singing along with music in the room

I don't think you can send the audio out from the interface BACK to the computer - the audio is already coming from the computer in digital form, somehow you'd have to take the analog from the interface back to the line-ins on the built-in soundcard for the computer speakers. That ain't gonna work.

Well, you can change the ASIO driver in Logic, to the internal soundcard for mixing if you want. You don't necessarily need the Tascam for playback, but connecting your speakers to it's outputs will be better quality.
