hi. does anyone have an opinion on any of these budget computer speakers (especially the subwoofers)?

Labtec Pulse 475 Speaker System
Creative Labs I-Trigue 2.1 Speaker System T2900
Altec Lansing 2.1 Speaker System VS2121
Altec Lansing 2.1 Speaker System VS4121
Logitech X-220 2.1 Speaker System
or any other in that price range

thanks,
jon.

Most of those subwoofers...suck. As in, i get better bass response out of M-audio BX5s, which are generally regarded as having poorer bass response compared to other monitors with 6 inch woofers. Going below 50 hz with any of the systems does not result in sound usable for mixing and recording purposes...it's just muck. I use to own that Labtec, and I had a Logitech Z-340 that was better but still mucky. My Fostex PS3.1 sub was more usable than those, but it still didn't sound good below 40 Hz.

Of course, this is just me. You should try to listen to some material on these before you make a decision. These might be just what you want... who knows?

yeah, i'm not expecting much...but right now i'm mixing on event tr5's, and they have very little bass reponse. i don't need studio-quality bass representation, just a little more to be sure that it's there. don't worry, i'm not expecting too much out of these subs, but i still know that researching even the most entry level equipment can pay off (xlr mics, behringer composer, rnc, and other cheap-but-good gear have tought me that).

thanks.

If you're using tr5s, I doubt you're going to get much. The subwoofer uses a 5.25 inch driver...which is the same size as the woofers in your tr5s. :) The labtec subwoofer's driver is even smaller. There's only so much you can do when the subwoofer is that small.

i respect your advice, but i think a 6.5" sub would help. the tr5's have a 5.25" woofer, and are rated to hit 53Hz. the creative sub is starts at 30Hz. to me, that's worth $79.

does anyone have any experience with the creative i-trigue sub? i've heard it's a little muddy, but still the best in it's price range.

I love the sub on my Klipsch Pro Medias. Very tight and musical. I think mine is 6.5" and they have an 8" now. Not sure how well it will work in your situation but it's probably better then the others. As I recall their 2.1 system is around $200 or a little more.

Like most satellite systems they lack too much in the mids to make them very good for mixing but they are great for checking the low end and getting a very 'hi-fi' representation of the mix.
