computer speaker balance

I'm trying to record from my 4-track or stereo (from headphones jack) into my computer. When I do, I only hear sound through the left speaker which completely ruins any ideas of panning instruments. When I convert from WAV to MP3 I can hear it through both speakers but the panning does not work, the left speaker is fine, the right is played at a much lower volume. Any file I listen to from the internet I can hear just fine, through both. I have tried recording in stereo and mono but with no success. Is it the cables? Or the sound card? Or the settings in my computer? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
 
Check the metal ends on your cables. If there are two metal sections with a plastic ring in between, then its mono. If there are three metal bits with two plastic rings separating them, it's stereo.

Stereo is what you want, mono is not.
 
I'll need a cable that has a 1/4in side and a 1/8in input end. I've been using a guitar cable from the headphones "out" on my stereo with an adapter at the other end. But aren't those standard guitar cables mono? Are there 1/4in size stereo cables? I don't think they have them at radio shack, would they at better audio stores? Oh, and any suggestions on free downloads of decent audio recording for Windows would be cool... Thanks. P.S. Isn't Whitehouse from Coventry?
 
Guitar cables are mono so that's where the problem is. To solve it you can;

1. Find a stereo 1/4" to 1/8" cable.
2. Make such a cable yourself with parts from RS
3. Get various cables and adapters that will give you the required cable ends. There are Stereo 1/4" cables available.
 
I am having the same problem, except I am using stereo cables. I have a Delta44. I am running my stereo PC speakers into a Stereo 1/8" to stereo 1/4" adapter. From there i go straight into output one. However, I am only hearing sound out of my left speaker. Any ideas?

The only way I got my balance problem resolved was to use a gold tipped stereo input. I got mine at Radio Shack. I don't know why the gold is better and a bit more in cost but for whatever reason it worked, now I can hear through both when coming right from the 4-track. Now my problem is clicking and popping so if anyone knows how to kill the clicks, that would be great news right about now....
 
As you are ussing your headphones out you may have to turn it down a bit.

I dont have a delta44 but I looked at their home page and I think that your problem is the followig:
The 4 Outputs of your card are NO stereo outs as those of a normal soundcard. They are BALANCED MONO Outs.
To get a stereo sound you will have to use 2 outs.
Or maybe there is a MAIN Out?
