WHAT IS A GOOD SOFTWARE TO USE ON A COMPUTER TO MASTER A DIGITAL RECORDING ONE THAT WILL HAVE EFFECTS ON IT. AND IS IT POSIBLE TO TAKE THE HARD DISK OUT OF A DIGITAL 4 TRACK AND PUT IT IN A COMPUTER AND DO IT LIKE THAT

t-racks is excellent for mastering on a pc....no effects, if you mean chorus, ring modulation, leslie, or shit like that...but you don't want that for mastering...you want dynamic processing...

not possible to switch the hardrive between four track and pc.....if you own a digital four tracker now, sell it asap and research what a pc can do.....hell, did anyone ever make a digital four track with a hard drive anyway?....all the ones i've seen use zip or jazz, or something else....

Not only are the 4-tracks made mostly with the removable discs, but the format at least for the Roland VS machines is different and the PC wouldn't be able to just read it like a normal disc anyway. There used to be software from Polarsonic that could take a VS track and convert it so the PC could read it (or something like that) but it would have to be on the fly and be able to convert back the other way in order to move the drive back and forth like you are suggesting. Not a bad idea to have a standalone digital machine for portability with a PC formatted drive in it, and then get one of those removable drive kits for the PC and be able to swap it back and forth. I haven't heard of anything like that existing though. I'd be interested in it if someone finds one.

T-racks is great if you are on a recording budget like I am, it's around $300. If you can spend more, then Wavelab is excellent. The Waves plugins are very good as well, but of course they cost even more money than Wavelab does.
