computer recording

I want to get into computer recording. I have been into recording for a little while but never on my own machine so i don't really know much about it or how it really works. If any of you guys can help me and give me some ideas as to what exactly im going to need to get started on this that would be great. thanks.

If you want to multitrack , all you really need to get started is a sound card that can do full duplex recording and some kind of preamp, guitar processer or keyboard to plug into the line input on your sound card. Some systems come with onboard sound that can't do full duplex recording, though this may be less true than it was a couple of years ago. If you have a soundblaster you should be good to go. Of course , you'll need some software. There are all kinds of demos available and quite a few free multitrack sequencers .

Are you into midi at all? If you tell us a little more about what kind of recording you want to do, I'm sure you will get all the help you need.

J is quite right........but the soundblaster....I jerked mine out and threw it in the garbage.....as far as Im concerned its a gaming card and nothing more....now if it was an Audigy, I doubt I would have tossed that, but I would'nt buy one to begin with for recording.
You can get a descent 24bit card between 150-300.00
Invest in a small mixer with analog and mic. inputs, phantom power would be nice in case you upgrade mics.
Your PC or Mac should be at least 500mhz I would say minimum
7200rpm HD 40-60gig dual drives if possible
Good CD writer
Software ???? to many to choose from, but if your serious maybe go with Cubase, Cakewalk, Logic Audio, or Pro Tools

As far as computer specs. That was a recommendation, but if all you got is all your getting, then I hope it works out.
