I'm about ready to take a leap forward in technology and set my computer up for more professional recording. However, I'm confused on what I'm going to need. I was thinking mixer->interface->computer. This seems illogical, as I lose the ability to record different tracks. Should I just do the input straight into the interface and then use a DAW controller? Or am I thinking the wrong way?

You need an interface with as many inputs as you have intruments to record at one time. There are many ways of getting out of a mixer other than the main outputs.
You could also go with outboard mic preamps.

So would the inputs on the interface act the same as the inputs on a mixer?

What's your budget, you're style of music, and how many instruments, do you want to do them all simultaneously, or are you satisfied with several takes (lower budget).

It's mostly going to be just a guitar and vocal track. Budget is as low as it can go, which means I can't afford anything much more than $200 for an interface. I play solo acoustic stuff, and I'd prefer to play and sing simultaneously. So, two or three simultaneous tracks would be fine (two for guitar, one for vocals). I may overdub with some other instruments, but guitar and vocals should be simultaneous.
