i have peiced a computer together before not really knowing what would be the best or needed for digital computer recording.
What stuff should i get to build a GOOD computer for only digital recording
stuff like memory, hard drive, proccessor, soundcard or maybe ardvaark 24?...

Best - AMD 64-bit FX53
Needed - 2.0 or above

Best - 2 gig RAM
Needed - 512 RAM

Best - 200 GB HDD
Needed - 40 GB

Just off the top of my head. Best is always questionable especially with soundcards. How many tracks you need to do at once? Got pres? Software? It adds up. Be more specific if ya want more replies!

great choices omen.
i would add...
1. get two hard drives. windows on one, your tracks on other.
get FAST hard drives. AND ENABLE DMA ON EACH.
DONT INSTALL TWO BIG DRIVES in terms of space.
in some cases it can lead to windows tracking overhead.
2. look at a pci sound card solution. NOT USB. and a tip. leave all other pci slots free so there is no possibility of disrupting pci bus traffic.
gamers sometimes do this and sometimes (not always) it can lead to probs.
if you want software solutions just ask.

well i will be recording mariachi usually consists of violin, trumpet, guitarron(a wood bass), a guitar

i would like to do simple recording like just haveing all players to come in and play at once. and i would like to be able to do real recording.

I have cubase vst is that anygood I mean will that work i also have cubase sx. Not sure which one to use. Should i use and ardvark 24?

Do you have a mixing board? If so you already have the preamps on the board meaning you only need a souncard with 1/4" or RCA connectors. How about mics? Headphones, monitors, cables, stands, it adds up!

Biggest hard drive not always best

I would have to disagree with you recommendataion on a 200GB hard drive 13th_omen. Bigger capacity hard drives are typically slower than smaller capacity hard drives.

And any way what in god's name are you going to record with 200GB?!? Unless you're producing a DVD video included that's just overkill.

My recommendations for a harddrive are as follows:
1. It should spin at 7200 rpms. The faster the harddrive spins the faster it can get that data on disk and the less RAM is tied up buffering. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

2. Get a hard drive with an 8MB buffer if possible. Once again this translates to faster reading/writing.

3. Pay close attention to seek time the lower the better.

The size question is up for grabs. I think 80GB is plenty. It's also alot easier to find 80GB hard drives that meet the above mentioned criteria.

I already have a MACKIE mixer, where and how much can i get a soundcard with 1/4" or RCA connectors? I already have 1monitor,cables, stands and mics.I dont have any head phones, but i do have 2 2way yamaha studio monitors.
where would the sound on the mixer come out to go into the soundcard 1.if i had rca connectors and 2. if i had 1/4" connector.

So ill get a faster hard drive
