need some help here. I need to uninstall to operating systems both loaded on ntsf partition. somehow lost my cdrom driver in the shuffle. is there a way to clean this thing out to load new operating system? Thanks

Sigh....

What OSes? Why are there two? Do you need to reload two? Why are you reformatting to begin with?

CD rom driver?? They don't need drivers.

o.k. here is what is happening. Don't know the prior history because its just one that I picked up to start from scratch. I do know the cdrom was working before the 2nd o/s was loaded. o/s are windows 2000 pro and windows xp pro. its a dell G1 350 Mhz with 64 memory which I can up if needed. first of all to much of anything I do know I need to get rid of the windows xp pro that was half installed. I have the c.d. but cdrom needs to work first? got any ideas where to start?

That's pretty much a dinosaur of a machine. Not sure it has sufficient specs to run WinXP.

However, can't you go into your BIOS and set the machine to boot first from the CD ROM. WinXP CD should be bootable.

yeah that computer's definately hurtin in terms of RAM... you are using 64 megs for recording purposes? if you are getting good results, you are a better man than I. I need every technological advantage i can get :)

ya actually I was recording with it till the mp3 trial version ran out. Then that was it as far as transferring files to wav or anything else. So decided to try uninstall and reload home studio 2004 to see if that worked. no go on that so tried hooking up the internet to that computer down here off my dsl and got that to work and downloaded and mp3 encoded. Well when hooking back upstairs the computer was so slow it won't even boot up. I will try to go back into the bios and see if I can first boot on cdrom and load the xp back in and uninstall it. I have more ram to load. I have a couple of 128's I also have a 120 Gb western digital hard drive too but they are in my old computer with 233 Mhz. I wonder if I should just go ahead the convert it all over now to start over. what do you think?

Don't bother with XP back on that machine. That's likely why it was so slow. I think winXP uses at least 64 megs of ram to load up on boot. If you can load windows 98se on it do so. Get a win 98 startup disk and load the OS, that is the OS that probably came with the machine and iw probably a much better match.
Go ahead and load the RAM after you get the OS on it that way you'll know what the problem is if the RAM doesn't initialize.

Don't plan on running very many tracks, maybe ten 16 bit max but also leave plug ins alone.

Use the 120 gig for a dedicated audio drive and use the current drive for programs only for maximum performance.

I don't have that but do have an millenium. will that work?

XP requires 700 mhz, and most people say that it is crazy to run xp on that. You should go down to 98se with a minimum install so that you can get any kind of performance at all. At that I would only put your recording software on the machine and nothing else, not even a background.

you need atleast 256mb of ram for xp to run right. it will run with less but slow. If you have millenium install that. However if the drive is already formated in NTFS the 98 boot disk will do you no good. since 98 can't understand NTFS.
You will need the cd rom drive working though.

Don't do ME, it is a big hassle for audio guys. ME is essentially Windows 98SE with some features from Windows 2000 bolted on, it is giving musicians particular problems with WDM drivers.

actually the window 2000 pro worked fine before the end of the mp3 encoder. all I need help with right now is getting my cdrom working again. my computer is just showing a and c drives. I can put a c.d. in and hear it running for about 15 seconds then quits.
