I'm interested in hearing some of your guys opinions, that's all.....I guess with a computer based setup you get a lot more plug in/editing options and with a SIAB it's all there ready to go.....I hear the Roland VS 2480 is the flagship for the SIAB's, but what do they offer with regards to upgrades and possible plug-ins such as pro tools and other software? Any suggestions would be great...

I currently use an Roland VS-2000CD w/VGA and Mouse so its almost like using software but im more than happy with it. Cant complain. I have always preferred hardware for recording cause it works good for me. With my vs2000 i dont have to worry about freezes and viruses. But thats me.

+1 for box studios

Get to a couple of different stores and ask some of the guys to show you how to lay a basic track and see what suits your fancy.Listen to some of the demos on the box studios also. Take opinions with a grain of salt on what to buy because you're the one that's going to be using your machine.

I have a Roland VS2000CD with Monitor, Keyboard & Mouse. VS8F2 card and VS8F3 card installed. Also have the Universal Audio plug ins as well as Antares Auto Tune.

I also have a 2.8 GHZ computer with 2 gig RAM and 2 large harddrives. It is running Sonar 5 SE and Sound Forge 8 (latest version). I have tried three firewire interfaces, being the Tascam FW1082, the Alelsis MultiMix 8, the Phonic Helix 18FW.

I've been recording in my home studio since the old R/R days and have been using computers since my first 8088 machine back in the mid 80's..... I started with Cakewalk back in the old....old days and have also given them a bunch of money on upgrades to where we are now.

It's been my experience, that the All-IN-One box would win hands down in MHO.

Reasons, It works out of the box and does so each day. You don't have to fritz around with drivers that don't work, Plug N Play that's a joke, or software that's always being updated or depending on your internet connection to work just to keep the computer up to date and running. We won't even talk about Virus threats............and the unstablility of Windows XP.

I've paid a fair amount of money in E-Bay fees, getting rid of computer audio interfaces that don't do what they advertise. I've lost hours of working time trying to get them to work.

Since going with the Roland, my Productive time has tripled and I get tons of work done. Not to mention that my blood preasure has gone down and is now stable.

I expect you will get lots of adverse responses to my opinions. So, If you have the money.....try both for awhile and I'm almost certain that unless you enjoy a pain in the butt, You'll Use the computer to surf the net and play Solitaire or keep your checkbook to record all the money you'll save in the end by going with the all in one box.

Hey, i use an 1880 and i am also happy with it...it is cheaper then getting a lot of outboard gear in stuff, it is sorta a pain in the ass sometimes but you got to start somewhere...there is a learning curve with it but even with computer based recording there is too....you can go to vs plant...just serch it in yahoo and it will come up...there are the expansion cards (vs8f 3) that work great on the 2480 and they have a ton of third party plugins that are top studio quality from ua, tc electronic ik mulitimedia..you can really do a entire recording from this thing and never leave it *which is nice...* there is a lot of button pushing...but if money is an issue then 100% go for a studio workstation...and if you are getting one get a roland...1880 or higher...there is also a program called vs pro made from a priviate party that allows you to hook it up via midi and then you have full editing from your computer which is great...i am gonna get it soon but its 300 dollars
if you have any more questions you can write me at my private email on here and i can help you make the right choice seeing as how it took me a while to make mine...
good luck to ya
