Computer keyboard problem

The other day I went to turn on my computer and nothing happened,as if it wasn't
plugged in.I opened it up and checked my power supply connections,everything looked
normal.By chance I unplugged the mouse and keyboard and Turned the power on and
it turned on and booted.I then shut it off and plugged the mouse and keyboard back in.
The power turned on,but it only booted as far as the "Windows98"cloud screen.I've
tried several times since and it will boot with the mouse plugged in,but not with the
keyboard.Is this a problem with the keyboard port.Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
 
Have you tried "Safe Mode"?

As soon as you see the words "Startng Windows98" hit the F5 key. This will start you in "Safe Mode".

Then reboot normally.

LMK if this does not fix it.
 
Unfortunately it wont respond to keyboard comands at all.Thanx for the
advice though!
 
Check you PS/2 connection

Are the mouse and keyboard switched?

Do the lights on the keyboard flash when you boot?

Have you tried another keyboard? Keyboards are cheap enough.

Sounds like hardware to me.
 
You've tried another keyboard and that didn't work either?

If you can't get either keyboard to work and you're sure that you've plugged it into the correct PS/2 port AND you get no lights on the keyboard THAN you have a problem with the motherboard.

Either you need to check your CMOS for a disabled keyboard/PS2 port (very doubtful) or the PS/2 port is damaged.
 
2 questions:
1:Is there a way to access my bios w/o a functioning keyboard.
2:Will a USB keyboard work the same as a ps/2 keyboard
With the exception of this keyboard problem,the computer is functioning normal.If
a USB keyboard could hold me over for awhile,I want to upgrade my mobo and
processor anyway.

This is actually a common problem. I've seen it under the following circumstances:

- Keyboard and mouse reversed. Make sure you plugged em back in right, assuming they're both PS/2.

- Keyboard using a large AT->PS/2 adapter that is to big to co-exist with the nearby mouse plug, causing the keyboard plug to go in crooked and put stress on the port.

- Bad keyboard. Bad keyboard cable.

It's actually a very frightening LOOKING problem. Either windows will not boot, or the machine won't even POST. The first time I saw it I remember swapping the video card, checking the hard drive, and all sorts of stupid things. There may be an option in your BIOS to halt on keyboard errors, and I recommend turning it on to avoid crapping your pants in the future.

First things first, make sure the keyboard is in the right spot. Then try wiggling the keyboard connector a bit. Finally, snag another keyboard and give it a whirl. I've never seen an actual keyboard port break, and it would certainly be a shame since it's (basically) impossible to replace.

USB keyboards are tricky, and require BIOS support to function outside of windows (e.g. accessing your BIOS setup, pre-windows boot screens, etc). Check your manual if you decide to go that route.
