ok. i officially gave up on windows, screw it. I just got my new mixer, thats not compatable either, so im whipping it clean.

im going to put windows xp but i want to know, with a new computer i just bought [that came with vista] and had the allt he hardware for it, is it ok to change it to xp?? will my firewire work? etc

like is there any chances of fucking my computer up? or not being able to use some hardware inside it, or even having any of the software work too? like simple windows media, etc

In order to install a new operating system, you will have to reformat your C drive. Which means you will lose EVERYTHING on that drive. You will also have to re-install all your software applications. Hardware will pretty much take care of itself during installation (firewire drivers) assuming this PC will be connected the the net. If not, you will have to download all the hardware drivers seperately, and install them yourself.

Bottom line: Your starting all over. You will void any warranty for your pre-loaded PC. You will be out there on your own. Read-up, do your homework BEFORE you do this. Learn to use google.

I would go and write down all the drivers you'll need now, download them, and burn them onto disc, then it'll be a whole lot easier.

i suspect your WAY off on this.... the OS should have nothing to do with hardware warrenties...

ye athats what im going to do, thanks everyone. and i know i can use google, but i was at work, and just needed a quick, hands on repsponse form someone.

thanks for the help.

No matter what you do, it is risky because the fact that Vista is installed means the hardware manufacturer has an agreement with Microsoft in respect to the operating system. I have encountered cases where you cannot install XP and get some of the hardware to work properly because the manufacturer will not give you the XP drivers because Microsoft will not let them. This is how badly Microsoft wants to sell Vista. You're better off getting a PC with XP already installed.

microsoft are *******, we won't buy their software because it's shite, so they force it upon us. It's pre-installed on almost every new computer, and all of us will need to get new computer sometime in the future.

Maybe the only option is to get Linux or a Mac? Without wanting to sound like a nerd, they are both hugely underrated - you don't need virus protection, which means MORE MONEY FOR RECORDING STUDIO!! And besides they are both much more stable than crappy old Windows and nicer and easier to use.

To the guy that said I was full of crap

I saw in my user CP that someone said I was full of crap for giving the answer that I did. First off, if you're going to say that, why not post it in public? Hey, go buy a Sony Vaio with Vista on it and try to load XP on it and tell me how far you get dude. I have a friend that did just that and he returned it because Sony would not give him the XP drivers.

I'm not saying every laptop manufacturer will do this (but it's likely). I'm not saying formatting and installing XP and getting the drivers is impossible. I'm just relaying experiences that I've had with this situation.

I did not give you that rep, but I for one do not believe this. That's an antitrust issue, and I believe MS and the hw manufacturers have been barred from forcing you to use a particular OS. In fact, as I best recall, I believe that you should be able to get a discount on the box if you choose to NOT get a copy of Vista with it.

Thundercage....I hit you up with some positive rep. I did this, because I checked out your post and found nothing rude or obnoxious in them...only questions and your opinions.

You must have made a MS junkie mad...

Anyway, I hate to see someone get neg repped for stuff like that.

True :)

Thanks man. Everyone should be free to express themselves and not be rude about it. Personally, I find that when there are different opinions on topics, there is usually a reason. Discussing those reasons lead to knowledge on both sides of the issue.
