hey guys nother newbie question here. what would you guys reccomend as far a mixing programs for the computer, i have tested out traktor and pcdj any other suggestions? and if you could drop a link that would be sweet

thanks
jason

i saw the comercial for that and actually went and checked it out, it didn't seem anything like what i was looking for. it's more of a toy than a piece of equipment. unless i am mistaken i don't think you can even use you own songs in it. the songs come with the software and the only other place you can get them is from thier web site. i am looking for something more like traktor or pcdj. it would however be nice if there were something that had an external crossfader

Sorry about that, 2422. I didn't go to the site (I just saw the commercial, and I thought of you).

Numark makes an external device ($299) that interfaces with PCDJ. There are 2 wheels, 2 faders, and a bunch of buttons. The only thing it can't do is scratch.

jason,

I looked into this kind of stuff for quite a while then gave up. A least at this point, I don't think it's possible to even come close to replicating in software and/or external controllers what a dj can do with turntables.

So I've taken a completely different direction. I'm going with what the computer can do best, which is intricate layering, looping, stretching, processing and such. I mainly use Sonic Foundry's Acid and Vegas to completely chop up songs and remix them into sometimes almost unrecognizably new ones, and also perform. Right now I'm working on some techniques to make my performances more improvisational, altering tempos, syncing beats, and layering on the fly.

I can't do many of the things a turntable dj can, but then a turntable dj can't do many of the things I can. I'm trying to invent a whole new animal.

I just ordered a new sound card and my next experiment is going to be with

Hey Spin, btw...

I've used that Mixman dm2. It really is just a toy, but I tired to make something interesting out of it.

I work for Intel ( mainly doing engineering development on our Picosecond Ultrasonic Laser Sonar production tools  :) ) . A good friend of mine in Corporate Demos asked me to come up with a 40 second 'commercial' mix for our big P4 2GHz launch. She wanted "testosterone" music to play when the VP came out on stage to announce and demo the new chip. The problem was that I had to use that damned dm2 and I only had the choice of three new P4 optimized "mixes", all of which were pretty lame.

I choose the trance mix which was the least lame of the three. But instead of using that toy I pulled all of the tracks into Acid, added several of my own, and came up with something I could be happy with. It's not bad considering what I had to work with. It even made it's way to China because we did a separate 2Gig launch there as well. Of course I didn't get to go. :(.

I'll post that mix along with some of my other stuff as soon as I can work out a server space (don't think I want to go with mp3.com).

Peace,

no i really never did find to much more info on this. i kinda gave up. i locked myself in the basement for about 2 weeks and finally did make a cd though :D if anyone in the chicagoland area wants a copy send me an email at darksidedigital2@aol.com. i don't really know to many people with "trained ears" so i could use some feedback from other dj's. this is my first cd and there is always room for improvement but i am pretty happy with how it came out. anyways here is the track list

1 intro -aphrodite, dark dark side (darkside digital mix)
2 voodoo and sareno, blood is pumping (original club mix)
3 white label record - end of the world (this track is the freaking BOMB)
4 dj ratty, sunrise (club mix)
5 las palmas, wonderland (alternative mix)
6 lightforce? join me (club mix) dos or die recordings not sure of artist
7 nick skitz, excalibur 2001 (skitz clubb mix)
8 bob burns jnr, hard rock 2000 (champion mix)
9 artemisia, bits and pieces disc 2 (uk gold remix)
10 nick rafferty, pumpin'
11 plug n play, time to bob
12 lock n load, blow ya mind (club caviar 12" mix)
13 stimulant dj's, freestyle flow
14 public domain, operation blade (bass in the place) (original mix)
15 cherry moon trax, the club the people the music
16 embargo, scream (original dub)

ohh yeah and barefoot it's funny i've had soundforge for about 3 weeks now and i have already tried experimenting with what you are talking about. i still need to upgrade my equipment and buy vegas and acid, but i think we are trying to acoplish the same goal here lets keep eachother posted of our progress. like i said i have only expirimented as i have spent most of the past couple weeks locked in my basement trying to record the "perfect" set. so you are probably doing alot more complex things than what i am.

hey Jason,

Spin was correct, by far the best I've eva used is mydm2 and its just under $100, so for a small investment and some small time learning it (it's easy) you can't go wrong

Over the past few weeks I've noticed a few dj's using PCDJ(?).

It seemed to work fine. :)

You might want to check that out. ;)

'aight.. i think i'm not gonna speak my mind here, or i might offend anyone

hehe.. i'm just one of those peeps who would throw bottles after a guy if i saw him dj'ing with a computer :D

I also feel you on that, Chriss .... but, I give any DJ mad props for doing what they "gotta do" to get in "da game".

You know, it's not my forte, but if they like it I love it. ;)

peace...

yea, yea.. it's ok if you wanna just check out whether you can beatmatch at all, and learn how to make a decent crossfade, but if i saw it at a club, i would demand my money back... (after having thrown a few bottles :D)

Chriss,

I hope you don't throw bottles when you see the artists who actually cut the records performing live. Playing live many electronica artists could be considered "computer DJ's" of their own music.

nah... dat's allright, but if i go to a club to see a dj spin, i wanna see him spin, eh?

I'm not prejudiced. ;) All long as the sh*t sounds tight, I'm happy.

:D

peace...
