Whoever said that read speeds with RAID 1 would be improved is wayyyyyyyyy off. Mirrored drives take performance down a few notches any way you look at it. If you're trying to go with a very safe bet, get a third drive and a decent controller and go RAID 5. Parity, striping, speed speed speed plus fault tolerance.
A UPS is not a surge protector, just a battery in case of a brown/blackout. You will still need to get a surge protector in your power chain. I've been running mine as [surge protector -> line conditioner -> UPS -> system] and it hasn't had a hiccup yet. Might also want to replace your power supply with a nice 450 watter (it makes a big difference).
In general, IRQs aren't particularly picky, but sometimes you'll run into one that wants a certain number (this happens a lot with NIC cards). Two cards shouldn't be overloading your PCI at all. What kind of problems are you getting from it? If it's a performance issue, it could be a number of things including ACPI.

Incorrect.

Mirrored drives can do simultaneous reads, thus increasing read speeds. However, write latency is increased, but peak throughput is limited to the speed of your slowest drive, unless you are using a hardware based solution that has onboard memory/cache. Get your facts straight. :rolleyes:

Scsi is speed king, but comes at the price of money, noise and heat. I have 2 10k disks in this pc, and the noise is too much due to both the disks and the fan to cool them. And I'm going to replace them by sata because of the ridiculous prices. But they are reliable and warranty is better.

Raid0 is asking for trouble, your reliability is halved compared to a single drive. The need for the speed is already answered.

Raid1 is just as fast as a single drive, but twice as reliable. Also twice as costly for the same capacity.

Raid5 is reliable, not as fast as raid1 in write mode and not as reliable as raid1. But you do loose less space so it is a bit cheaper than raid1 for the same capacity. Don't do this if you don't want to spend on a special controller that can do the parity calculations without the cpu otherwise performance is even worse.
 
Well I was gonna do RAID 0 and backup to an external after every session. Should I still be concerned about reliability? I mean, the drives have just as much of a chance of breaking down with regular use (non-RAID) right? A RAID array wouldn't increase the possibility of drive error, would it?

I've got a surge protector, but no UPS. That will change, for sure.

My issue is some pops and clicks when I record more than five or six tracks in Cubase (SX 3.0). When I bring in tracks recorded elsewhere (no matter the number of tracks) there are no pops and clicks. Also, the pops are in the same place on each playback. So the recordings are being affected as they are being recorded. My latency is set to 512 in the Delta 1010lt, which should be a piece of cake for my comp.
 
Well, at least your story isn't THAT bad....I have a friend who had a 10,000 rpm hard drive quite literally explode. One of the platters fractured and then shattered, destroying all the other parts, and sending shrapnel through his motherboard and computer case.
