Howdy yall.
I'm new here and to home recording and need some advice on compression.
Are there common everyday settings most people use on vocal compression. We are recording some country /folk style tunes. My HD8 has a compressor onboard but i don't know how yo use it!!
Any help would be awesome.
Thanks

I think this was put together by Raw Depth. I've found it pretty useful for getting some idea of compression on vocals. But let me encourage you to search through this forum because questions about compression are numerous, plentiful and voluminous. Also, do plenty of research both in books and on line about it. And mess about with the compressor on your HD8 and see what different things happen. Not a small number of people will tell you that if you can hear the compressor's work, you've overdone it, unless you are using it for a very specific effect that you do want to be heard.

TunemanDude :D

Once you read thru and get a good handle on what a compressor DOES...I've found the best way (for me) to learn comp was to just start twiddling the knobs.

There really isn't any cookie cutter settings that are gonna work. Your gear, room, vocals etc are gonna be different than anyone else's so it only makes sense that the settings will be different.

Push all the knobs to extreme settings and listen to what each one does to the sound, repeat til ya get the hang of it and find the setting that works for that particular track or mix.

Why do you need compression? Answer that and you'll have a good start on setting the compressor.

Well I just read a post not to long ago and I can't seem to find it but it went a little something like this : Don't use it just because you have it!! use it only if your having problems.
I hope this helps.
