I think I found a way to use a software compressor as a real-time unit (ie. it would permanently effect the track on the way in....not an after effect).

I am fairly unfarmiliar with the true function of compressors beyond the world of slightly tweaking my presets.

When I belt strong parts of vocals, I have a problem with digital distortion and was wondering if I could get some help as to how to best set up the compressor to keep the vocals from clipping....any ides?

Turn your record level down.

I don't know how you could use a software compressor to effect a signal BEFORE it hit your A/D converters, unless you were using two different workstations in tandem, which makes no sense to me, as the clipping would simply occur on a diffferent set of converters.

I could tell you how to use a hardware compressor for this, but have no idea how to do it with a software compressor, unless you were trying to reduce output clipping.

In the absence of a hardware comp, best stick to jslator's advice.

Are you trying to get general guidelines for how to set your
"attack" and "release" parameters?

Wow. That's pretty amazing. You should really patent that. :D

Turn your output down on the plugin/software/whatever.

Or turn your mic gain own a few notches.

It depends on where the clipping occurs - experimient and find out.
