compressor/noise gate

Can I use the noise gate from my Alesis 3630 with the RNC compressor? I usually use the RNC from the insert jack in my Fostex DMT-8. To use the noise gate, must I run say a mic, directly into the 3630 noise gate (no compression) then into the the RNC and then into the mic input. Anyone else faced this problem?
 
You probably won't get enough gain from your mic for either unit to work properly. Compressors and Gates work with Line Level signals, not mic level.

If you are using the insert normally, try this:

Insert the TRS end into your insert point. Run the send line to the unit you want to use for the noise gate.

From the output of the noise gate device, run a wire to the input of the compressor unit.

Then take the return line for your insert cable from the output of the compressor unit.
