Does it make sense to insert Compressor and EQ in V main? The reason I ask is because the signal there is in the red while the individual tracks are green.

the vmain is in the red cuz its the sum of the other tracks I e....each track is 1 add them up lets say 4 tracks the sum is 4 considerably higher then the tracks individually. Yes it makes sense to put a compressor and eq on the v main...its usually done to add the icing on the cake if you use the vmain as your mixbus...or u can use it as a submix from drums or vox ie if you want a group of tracks to have the same compressor or eq or reverb or all 3....
Compressing and eq'ing an entire mix is usually done as part of the mastering process. If you are mixing down and mastering in a single step, then you can put your compressor and eq on the VMain.
If however, you plan on mastering the material in a separate process (probably a more typical approach), then just turn down the volume on your VMain until it is not clipping.
