I've been asking questions about compression since I've gotten here and I'm still only halfway understanding.

Through my own research I think I just understood that compression works as a way to flatten out the sound, making everything at the same level by bringing down the highest ends so that they mesh well with the lower sounds. Am I correct?

So with that logic, compression has nothing to do with the smoothness of a sound? Like if I want to achieve a silky sounding vocal like most professional records, that isn't done through compression because compression only helps bring down the screaming and amplify the whispers?

Well then if it's not compression, what part of the mixing starts to give the take a smoother, warmer sound?

Actually compression can help that. Its also EQ and multi-tracking. And good mic's and preamps...

edit: but basically compression does have to do with controlling the volume of a signal.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I'm currently rebuilding my home studio now I have some understanding of hardware. I've been interning at a studio and getting some kind of knowledge of the things I'm working with. I think once I really know what certain things do, then I rebuild my own home studio.

I spoke to a gentleman at the guitar center who really helped me piece together some things. Here's what he put together for me at a reasonable price:

1. Native Instruments Maschine - $599.99
2. Akai MPK49 - $399.99
3. Blue Bluebird Condenser Mic - $299.99
4. PreSonus Microphone Preamp - $299.99

And another desk for $400, lol.

How would you (or anyone else) rate that? I haven't used any real hardware other than my Mbox and a midi controller. It's been pretty amateur. Now that I'll be out of college soon, I want to step out at least having the right gear so I can make a serious advancement into a career that I'd love.

Thats a lot of cash to drop all at once with limited experience. I would post the mic and preamp stuff in the mic forum. Maschine is a pretty powerful ssytem - what kind of music are you making? Is it electronic/techno type stuff?

It does sound like a lot of cash to pour in to equipment. The Presonus and Bluebird are pretty good. You can always check out some used mics. Cant go wrong with an AT4050. But unless you are making a lot of electronic music I would check out a nice interface instead of the controllers. I use the presonus firepod 10 with adobe audition 3 and it works very well and has a great sound. Also check out reason 5. I'm sure it could give maschine a run for its money.

You'll definitely need a good interface and a decent DAW if you are using outboard gear like synths.
