compression before or after eq?

when should you compress, then eq and when should you eq then compress. what's the difference anyway?
 
compress after EQ. that way, your EQ wont drive your level over 0db cus your compression will stop it. you'll have a different tonal sound aswell by patching the processors the other way
 
But also realize the compressor after the EQ is going to change what you did with the EQ; so think about using the compressor in conjunction with EQ and the EQ in conjuction with the compressor. The setting on the compressor and what outputs from the compressor will depend on the settings on whats from the EQ.

I suggest a peak limiter after EQ if you're trying not to go over whatever your determined threshold level you set is.
