compression and make up gain

If I'm doing some fairly heavy compression and then make up the gain with my preamp trim instead of the compressors gain control will this cause any problems. Its seems to me that my preamp has a cleaner gain stage.

Shouldn't matter snapper - it's an either or situation.

If you can bypass the gain preamp on the compressor then it could be a good idea.

A better idea would be to try to feed in more gain from the mixers trim-gain or from the source, before it runs into the compressor.
