Hey, fellow sound treating enthusiasts!

I'm going to be purchasing fabric for my DIY panels/bass traps. I looked around and couldn't really find a fully comprehensive thread on fabric. I know the difference between most of them is minimal, but the prices aren't. So lets share what fabric we use, the price (make sure to include the width!) and thoughts/feelings about it. I'll start.

I'm looking to buy muslin, 60 inches wide, which is going for $3.00/yard.

Note: for standard 2 feet wide boards, and 4 inches thick these are the economics behind purchasing (by putting boards side by side)

To standardize prices for comparison purpose, just divide the width by panels. In my case for example, 2 panels/$3.00 = $1.50. since I'm using standard 2 by 4, I need about 3 yards per panel. That's $4.50 fabric for each panel.

30 inches: 1 board

60 inches: 2 boards

90 inches: 3 boards

120 inches: 4 boards

These measurements give 1 inch extra on each side. (width) + (side) + (side) + 1 inch extra each side (2 inches).

(24'') + (2'') + (2'') + (2'') = 30'' per panel

- Mind that this would be flipping the boards forward towards each consecutive yarn.

Not sure what your 'board' is, nor the 'yarn'?

I think you forgot that you'll want to cover the back of each trap as well as the front (do not put solid backs on them)

Note that if you are using standard 24"x48" insulation pieces, the inside dimensions of your traps will be 2'x4', outside will be that + 2X wood thickness.
So you have 24" + 24" + 2X (wood thickness) + 2X (wood width), so for 1"x4" wood (which is really 5/8"x 3-1/2") your 60" width muslin will wrap around the width of the trap with just enough extra to fold over and staple. Lengthwise, you'll need 48" + 2X (wood thickness) + 2X (wood width), so about 58".

Frameless :3

These calculations are just concerning the width of the yarn, not actually how many yarns long.

Ok, so remove the wood thickness from each of my calculations, but still don't know what you are referring to with 'board' and 'yarn'. the advantage of a wood frame is that it doesn't leave you with this floppy thing, the frame gives you easy way to hang it and a way to staple the cloth tight.

24" + 24" + 2X (insulation thickness) = 52", your 60" width muslin will wrap around and leave 8" to trim, fold over and staple. Lengthwise, you'll need 48" + 2X(insulation thickness), so about 56" plus an inch or so to fold over. that figures at 1.6 yards of 60" material for each trap = $4.80

Or if you do the material width the other way, 54" needed (allowing 2" for fold over/staple) = 1.5 yards = $4.50.
