Hi, my name is Bert, and I am a moderate musician. I have recently gotten into recording, but am totally confused. I have a Fostex x-28 4-track analog recorder. I can get the monitors to work, but I don't know howto record, or play back what I've recorded. It didn't come with an owners manual so I'm stuck guessing. (Fostex doesn't have it on their site either, so don't waste your time look :P)

Can anyone tell me howto use my recorder in a nut shell? I can figure out the mixing/mastering/mixdown myself, I just need to know howto record and play back, thanks!

Feel free to cuss, swear, and damn me all the hell if you want to, its okay, I've been doing it all night.

Heya, thanks for the link. It helps a bit, but I still can't figure out a) howto record b) how to hear what I've recorded in playback mode and c) how to mixdown

That layout of the X-30 is quite different to the X-28.

I've been trying to figure this thing out all morning before posting again, because I don't want to be one of those guys that doesn't like to get their hands dirty. I just cannot for the life of me figure this recorder out, it's so clandestine.

This is a link to which recorder I have: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3700879190&category=15199

Just so you can see what I'm dealing with.

On the X-30, it says to press play, then the record button to record which ever track I have selected, I do that, and the tape plays and the record button flashes. Shouldn't it just stay on if it's recording? The fact that it's flashing leaves me to believe it's paused.

Also, on the outputs, the recorder has 2 Tape out jacks, Aux send, Line Out, and Monitors. I can get the monitor to work, but my question is, say I theoretically got a track recorded, would I have to use the Line Out jacks to mixdown to a masterdeck before I can hear what I've recorded? That just doesn't seem logical, pls help me guys.

(Once again, sorry for being a newbie, me and technology do not mix, especially without an owner manual/engineering training.)

I have personally never used what you have there but I might be able to help. First off, what are you using as monitors? I would say that you should press and hold rec after you selected the tracks you want to record then hit play. If it is still flashing try hitting rec again. It sounds like it may be in punch in mode (at least that's how some ADATs work). After you record the track, rewind it then arm your next track you want to record and disarm the one you already recorded. Hit rec and play again and you should hear the first track and be able to record the new one along with the first one. Does this help at all?

PS
You are using blank recordable tapes right? Just checking!

Yeah man that helps alot! I dont think its in punch mode though cause I have no pedal plugged into the Punch IN/OUT jack, but thanks, your info helps a lot! Thanks! ;)

HEYYYYYYYY i FIGURED IT OUT! Thanks for the help. All I was doing wrong was I had to press record and play at the same time. Also, on INPUT B, I had to turn the Pan knob all the way to input or track. Pretty simple, all I have to work on now is mastering and mixing! Thanks you guys, you all rule! :)
