My first post!

I am interested in recording by myself at home. I'm not looking to do anything incredible and I don't have a ton of money to spend. I'm not looking to expand either - I just want to be able to put some songs together piece by piece.

My cpu is a Gateway running Vista Ultimate and let's pretend I have enough RAM ;)

I don't have a mixer or anything and I'd rather just use software to deal with that - Pro Tools? I don't know.

I guess any recommendations anyone has are welcome. Regarding software, I probably don't need more than 8 tracks, hardware, I just need something that my cpu can interface with that has one 1/4in and one XLR input...

Thanks in advance!

After some research, does anyone have an opinion regarding the M-Audio Fast Track Pro? I assume it would work with Reaper...? And what's the deal with Vista and ASIO? Will that make a difference?

I would look into an M-Audio 2496 (bout$99), N-Tracks ($69) and a Yamaha MG mixer($99).

Here's the links:

M Audio 2496

N Track Studio

Yamaha MG10/2 mixer

Of course, this assumes you know how to install a PCI card in your Gateway. And how to modify your Vista to use it. You'll need a decent mic - Shure SM58 ($50) and cords ($20).

total cost about $350...

No prob... If a PCI internal sound card is more than you care to handle, there are a few external USB cards to choose from. The are a bit more expensive, but don't require opening up your case.
