HI Guys,

I am still shopping around and need some input. I need to no pros and cons from each of these programs besides the price:

n-track $42.00 (Online)

Cake walk $29.00 ("BestBuy" in my home town)
$39.00 Circuit City

PowerTrack Audio 49.00 (Online)

Depends on what you want to do; what system you have and what your ultimate aim is.

Midi? Audio? Laptop? Budget? Multi-tracking?Live?

Peeps here have invested between "not a lot" and $000's in their recording system. We, of course, think that Cakewalk Home Studio is the best starter package going all the way to the new Sonar 3.0 Producer Edition.

As ever, yer pays yer money and yer takes yer pick;)
Post back with an idea of what you want to achieve.

I have used earlier versions of n-tracks (1 and 2), but am a Sonar 3 user now.

n-tracks was originally an audio program, midi has been added later on. And looking briefly at version 3, I think midi still covers only the most basic things. So if you intend to record/edit midi, n-tracks is not for you. On the audio side it is very capable. It was one of the first programs that could run real-time with plug-ins. I used it some years ago to improve some 70's reel-to-reel recordings and convert them to digital.

n-tracks is produced and programmed by one person. He seems very sincere, and you get updates all the time. The problem with earlier version was that it was somewhat instable. In Sonar I get drop-outs and just press the play button again. In n-tracks the whole program crashed and had to be restarted. Don't know if that is still so in n-tracks 3.

Can't tell you about the budget Cakewalk versions, since I don't know them. But if your main interest is midi, take a closer look.

As to Powertracks, I am considering that myself for live usage. Wouldn't use it for editing, but I have a feeling that several people use it live. You can lay down midi and audio tracks, play them or control equipment. And it might even have a way to display lyrics for karaoke or to support your own memory. But I have not had time to look closer at this yet.

It would help alot to know which Cakewalk program this is... ;)

I guess it is a basic version of Cakewalk.

It is called "Music Creator 2003" and can be upgraded to "Music Creator Pro"

Looks very much like the Sonar most of us use around here. Flicking through the pages I find it hard to tell what is missing. It has plug-ins (dx), acidized loops, audio with effects, midi. Can't see if they have limited the number of tracks. But they don't mention that.

Of the ones you've mentioned above, I'd say get this. $29 is what you pay for pizza for the family around here. If you like you can always upgrade and get a bigger brother that works in the same way, so your investment in learning is not wasted. None of the competition has a bigger brother.

Thanks alot everybody for your quick responses.
As far as tracks: Maximum Number of Audio and Midi Tracks= Unlimited.
That's what it says on the box.

I would suggest Cakewalk, also.....

Once you get enough money you can upgrade to Sonar 3.0.

Yes, that is true. But that statement is dependent on the specifications of your computer.
