compacting audio data

how safe is it to do this to a project in cwpa 9?
what's the difference between that and saving as a .bun file?
does anyone know?

I do it all the time and I've never observed any problems or issues.

It's not the same as saving as a bun, though the act of saving to a bun does compact the data while it's doing it. If I'm not mistaken, the compacting just takes all the various bits of WAV data stored in different files from multiple takes and replaces them with one single file with all the wav data in it. I guess it's more efficient to have a single file open than to have multiple files open.
 
Alchuck is exactly right. By compacting your audio data, your hard drive does not have to work so hard when playing back your music. I noticed that when I compacted 20 or so tracks the hard drive meter went down substantially.
 
great. i'll use it then. but i think i don't need it right now, my disk meter never goes beyond 4%. but i'd better do it anyway, i guess.
