Before you toss money on the 1176 and such units, you should know what you're buying. It seems you don't, since you're asking.

Oh, and be prepared to pay more for a used mono comp than you did for that EMU unit.

Your question is kinda like asking... "what's better, a Toyota or a Ferrari?"

Both will get you to your destination, but there may be other reasons to prefer one over the other.....

Your very question indicates that you need to do more research before you plop money down on ANYTHING.......!

Emperical Labs Distressor. With Brit mod or not, this is possibly the best compressor out there!

But, there are other worthy candidates too!!!

Maybe you would get more direct answers if you asked which comp is best for a specific purpose. Even then, you would get varied responses!

Bruce, this is more like asking "what is better, and Porche or a BMW?". Obviously, he is not interested in the RNC's, Composer, 501 type of stuff. While they may offer decent solutions, nobody is going to confuse a RNC to a LA2A!!! Or a Composer to a 1176. Or a 501 to a STC-8!!!

I would venture to say that once you get into the $1000 per channel + range, you start getting into the really good compressors! Each have their own great uses.

Look at:

Manley
Cranesong
Emperical Labs
Universal Audio
Urei
Focusrite
GML
Fairchild

Ed

Yeah - my example was inaccurate, but that's what I was getting at.... if he's plopping down big bucks for one of the big guns, he probably should understand the specific characteristic differences, as opposed to simply "the best"!

Ed and others, what do Urei 1176's and LA2A's usually go for?
Do they pop up once in a while on Ebay?
Since I got my RNC since yesterday, I'm ready for the next step! :D
Seriously though, I'm gonna add a Joemeek C2 for some different color, and then I'll be saving up for the $1000+ range...

How versatile is that Distressor thing anyway? I heard it had a specified button for 1176's "All button mode"...

People have given you a great list on compressors that will modify your sound many times in a good way. Most of these are " character adders" as well as compressors. They are all great to have....however

If you want a comp that can handle nearly any type of thing you throw at it, and REALLY REALLY control behaviour, the DBX 160SL is really really great! It wont add to your sound the way an LA-2A will and will not creatively characterize your audio the way a distressor will, but if there is one compressor you can count on to do EXACTLY what you tell it, 160SL

There is no "bet...period" compressor, and if there were, you couldn't afford it. :)

There usually isn't even a "best value" in the pro music industry, you pretty much get what you pay for, but when it comes to compressors, the RNC is the exception to that rule.

So, the answer you want is the FMRaudio RNC, although that's not what you asked for. :)

K your very right all of you and thanx for your answers...
to answer what it is i want it for....I guess i would say somthing thats good to record hiphop as well as rock...as far as the $$ not being a problem , I said that because someone is giving me enough for any compressor/'s i might need to record hip/rock..
I got bit exited yesterday and just bluerted out "I want the best" knowing there is no best...well its free sh*t i jumped on it can you blame me? :D

I guess what i want to know is this----> i have a 32/8 analog mixer, load of digital synths, guitars, drums, basses, mikes...
I need to record hiphop N Rock or even mixed together..
I have no compressor right now at all, what should I get or what would you get given my situation and required task?
does that help?

thanx everyone

That's like giving a Lambourghini Diablo to someone without driving license. While he's at it, he might as well toss in a Diablo ? Equal price, more fun.

k realy children, insults realy arent geting me any closer to geting what i need. We all have to start somewhere and just because im getting to drive a any car I choose and some children cant doesent mean I shouldent drive at all..
I came here for help not to be told im a newbie, or whatever,
so if all you want to do is write down some silly comment,
then just stay the f**k out the thread ...
And much thanx to the people who actualy help me.

OK... then it's simple........

Go HERE.... choose one (they're ALL excellent).... pay the man.... enjoy!

OR.........

Don't get a compressor at all -- if you don't know anything about using it and aren't interested in learning technique before you buy, then you're actually better off without one!

i am sorry, i don't want to spam here...ESP. after you told us not to.

but jesus christ grab $100 out of the compressor fund and go take a freshman composition course at a local community college.

oh - as far as practical information goes, if you can't really spend $2,000 or whatever - the Drawmer DL241 has been a good compressor to me.

They go for like $650 new, last I saw.

Actually if you got al the money in the world to spend, forget what I said, and get a Fairchild ! HELL yeah

Rather than spending all that money for a comp, why don't you invest on superb signal chain starting with a HI-Quality Condensor and Dual-Tube Pre-amp!!
