hi! so i'm definitely a noob when it comes to studio recording and I like the concept of being able to get others input via a forum so... what do you think of this. View attachment armsopendemo.mp3 Its a very simple mix as in just piano and vocals I might try to add some more stuff later for her like strings and what not maybe some soft drums but back to what I have now. I have some 1176se and la2a compression on the vocals, a emt 250, some eq, pitch correction(too much in some places). Piano has a la2a and steinbergs multiband compressor and some eq.

I think the piano sounds to toyish but i dont know what to do to make it sound more grand ish... its an upright. and i just dont think the overallness sounds that great. what do you guys think i should change? Thanks for your input!

VERRY GOOD MIX! The piano round 4K might need to be EQ'd also a desser on the vocalist there quite a few S's in the mix. Also 1:20-1:29 I think you caught the vocalist smacking, lol sometimes singers do this before a phrase and a compressor can make it sound like a click might want to edit that out. Overall 9 out of 10 very soild mix good sound quality. As far as too much pitch correction, no such thing if done correctly.

4K in some places in the mixes might want to automate
Desser on vocalist.
and might want to clear out a little middle on the piano your preference tho

I think the piano is fine, you can tuck in some high end and lift some mid's to bring out that grand sound also some reverb and little compression. Why the L2A after the 76. Most of the time when you have a 76 there is no need to follow behind with a nother comp unless your going for tone and harmonics.

thanks! Ill go play with some 4k when I get home. I'm pretty sure I have a desser on the vocals but I wasn't really hearing it that much so ill go play with it some its just the desser within cubase. I heard the smacking also i just havn't cut it out yet.... I get distracted with other stuff and forget to go back :) with the pitch correction i think i just straightened it out and optimized the notes too much on certain points where there was a lot of pitch changes making it sound like t-pain i'll be going back and making it more natural sounding.

I was thinking some emt250 on the piano might sound nice but i didn't play with setting long enough to get it to sound good. I think i used it the other way around but i was using the l2a as a soft barley touching the peaks just to get it to come down a wee bit and the 76 as a main compressor to lift some lows and lessen the peaks. I hear the l2a has a nice tone to it being tube based. maybe I should use it the other way around to get more tube tone what do you think? or should I toss it and just stick with a 76? thanks

Sometime 1 Desser dosent cut it. I use 2 dessers one for the high end of the S's and another for the lower end of the S's. The first Desser is really taming the S's the 2nd one is grazing. Yea, definitely want to go into "Listen" mode on your Desser plugin.

What pitch correction are you using? Meloydne is a very natural sounding pitch correction plugin. Side note, I DO NOT follow the creed of "PERFECT" pitch correction to where its sounds too perfect. The sound becomes to robotic, there is a sense of realism and a natural feel when every single note is not pitch perfect. If it dosent sound out of key dont fix it.

I dont think EMT250 have the proper verbs. Try a dark plate (watch the mid's) might want EQ the verb or use a plugin with a EQ built in. Follow the plate with a Bright Room verb with some early reflections and a nice amount of pre delay. Really listen to the verbs USE BOTH IN SMALL AMOUNTS!!! Listen to it till you hear the right feeling. (Make sure your plate & Room are on Aux and your sending amounts to each)

Stick your tune in the MP3 clinic immediately above. This isn't the correct forum and a lot of people won't find it here....

Yeah like Armistice said, post it in the MP3 Mixing Clinic.

I'll just say that it sounds great to me. The singer has a beautiful voice. Reminds me of Caitlín O'Riordan. I really enjoyed listening.
